Doris A. Carraher
Doris Adelaide (Huneke) Carraher, 83, of Emmaus, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer and died June 30, 2018, peacefully at home. She was the wife of the late Larry Carraher. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John and Marie Huneke.
She and her husband lived in Pearl River, N.Y. until moving to Emmaus in 1975. She worked as a medical assistant and teacher’s aide in New York. She was a secretary and a middle school athletic director for the East Penn School District.
She was an avid swimmer. She loved sewing, playing cards, dining out, visiting with family and friends, talking with her sister on the phone and Penn State University tailgating. Her favorite pastime, however, was watching her children and grandchildren play sports.
She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday School teacher and a Vacation Bible School instructor.
She was a member of the Macungie Garden Club and the Lehigh Valley Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at Macungie Park and the LVHN gift shop.
She was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit where she served on the decorating committee, the altar guild and the quilting group.
She is survived by daughters, Beth and her husband Ron Witte, of Emmaus, Susan, of Emmaus; sister, Ann (Bill) Sullivan; daughter-in-law, Gretchen Carraher-Kohler (Ben); seven grandchildren: Ross (Jamie) and Mattison Witte, Erin (Mike) Piazza, Brian (Charity), Drew, Molly, and Kyle; three great-grandchildren, Summer and Aria Piazza and Scott; brother-in-law, John (Peggy); sister-in-laws, Gail Raksnis and Sandy Antonacci; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and her son, Scott.
Contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Emmaus.
Calling hours will be 10:30 a.m. to noon July 6 at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, 3461 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Emmaus. A Memorial Celebration of her life will follow at noon in the church. Arrangements were made by the Schantz Funeral Home, Emmaus.
