Partnership with Nike approved

The Parkland school board has approved an athletic contract with BSN Sports for the Nike Rewards Program to purchase apparel and equipment.

At the March 10 committee meeting, Athletic Director Andrew Stephens said, “The upfront funds are $10,000, but the rebate estimate based on prior year spending is $15,000.

He went on to say the rebate funds may be used to acquire apparel and equipment, The Nike uniform switchover estimate is $5,500 based on the previous year’s spending and projected annual uniform purchases.

In the contract, only varsity will be required to have Nike uniforms,

As replacements come due, all programs will receive Nike.

Stephens noted Nike is a globally recognized and respected brand which will reinforce Parkland’s commitment to excellence in athletics.

He said the Nike partnership will provide high quality gear which will strengthen school spirit in all sports and extracurricular activities.

BSN is a local company which supplies athletic uniforms to schools.

Resident Laura Warmkessel spoke about her experiences with Nike clothing for her family. She said the products do not hold up well and will not last.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Madson said Nike is the brand preferred by personnel in the athletic department.

He noted cheerleading is the only team for which Nike does not make a uniform. Madson said shoes are not included in the contract.

The plan has incentives for booster clubs and other activities to purchase Nike apparel. Stephens said the outcome will be a unified look for the entire athletic department and extracurricular activities which will allow the district to outfit coaches and staff and promote the Parkland brand.
