Tennis team earns medals
Northampton’s boys tennis team took home four medals by two doubles pairs at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Boys Tennis Tournament on April 16 at Freedom.
At No. 2 doubles, Max Kochan and Chace Roland won the fourth place medal with an opening-round victory over Allentown Central Catholic, 8-6.
“We came out here and knew we were gonna start off playing Central, and they were our first match of the season. It was a rough loss, and we came back and won today,” said Kochan.
The K-Kids faced Liberty in the semifinal but lost, 10-2.
“Liberty started to figure us out a little bit and started to position themselves better so that we couldn’t really do much,” Roland said.
Kochan and Roland were partners at No. 3 doubles last year, also winning fourth place in the EPC Tournament.
“Since last year, we’ve gotten way better between our own skills and playing together,” said Kochan. “We’ve still got team districts, and it’s looking even better this year.”
At No. 4 doubles, Matthew Williams and Bobby Weaver won the fourth place medal with an opening-round win over Central, 8-6.
“Overall, the day went very well,” said Williams. “When we played Central back in March, they were our first match, and in the first set, we beat them in a tiebreaker, and in the second set, we beat them, so I was assuming it would be pretty close, but then we did a lot better than I was expecting.”
Williams and Weaver took on Liberty in the semifinal but lost, 10-3.
“We lost two weeks prior, 0-6, 2-6, so we were coming in with open minds, trying whatever we wanted. We ended up losing, but we definitely improved,” said Weaver. “We had a lot to work out throughout the season, and now we communicate a lot and play a lot better, and we know where to place the shots.”
The K-Kids are new to the high school tennis circuit as seniors.
“It was a great experience, and I’m so glad that I joined the team,” said Williams. “We’ve known each other for a long time, but the teamwork and chemistry, you can’t beat it, especially for our first season.”
Northampton coach Daniele Bowman couldn’t be prouder of all her players.
“[Bobby and Matthew] just picked up the racquets eight weeks ago, so I’m very happy for how they finished. Last year [Max and Chace] won fourth place at 3 doubles, and they worked hard to get to second doubles and finished in fourth place,” she said. “It was nice that my whole lineup was here today, which I said before, I love their comradery and cheering each other on, and it’s just a great group of guys.”
Northampton will compete in the District XI Class 3A Team Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on May 5.
