Schultz helping to lead softball team

Through the past three years, Josie Schultz has enjoyed success in her career at Whitehall. And, she can attribute it to her family and her home.

“I first learned how to throw and hit by playing whiffle ball in our backyard with my younger brother Henry,” recalled Schultz. “When I was 7-years-old, I knew I wanted to play on a softball team at Egypt Park.

“While attending Whitehall softball summer camps at a young age, I was inspired by the older players like Lindsey Gawrys and other athletes from that team. They created an environment that made many young players, including me, dream of being a part of such a group of athletes.”

Schultz certainly gained from the surroundings.

As of last week, the junior shortstop led the team in hitting (.421) and runs (10) and was tied for second in hits (8).

Along with her offensive skills, head coach Jeff Vivian has seen her as the complete player, and the answer in the leadoff spot.

“Josie has been the glue for us defensively,” stated Vivian. “She has really settled in at short, which was a little bit of a transition, but she handled it well. Offensively, she picked up right where she was last year before her injury.

“She impacts the game in so many different ways for us offensively. She can play in the gaps, she can play the small game, and she can steal bases. Just a complete player and the ideal top-of-lineup hitter. I think this really shows how much we missed her last year.”

Over the years, Schultz has become familiar with the infield.

“Growing up I played middle infield, either playing shortstop or second base,” noted Schultz. “My freshman and sophomore year I played second base, and this year I play shortstop.”

Schultz also had to make some adjustments to the high school game.

“The overall speed and quality of the game was a quicker pace than I was familiar with at that point,” said Schultz. “Although I didn’t start as a freshman, I was fortunate enough to contribute to the varsity team whether it was running bases for teammates or filling in to get older girls some rest.

“Even though I played a lesser role being a freshman on the varsity bench, I was able to see how the team relied on all types of contributions. This showed how a championship caliber team’s success was a direct result of players making a variety of contributions. I was fortunate enough to contribute where I could, and this allowed me to have an easier transition to starting at second base my sophomore year.”

Coming off a district championship last year, Schultz is aware of this year’s expectations. She also has seen how her team has raised the bar on the last two years and set their identity.

“From the past two years, I believe Whitehall softball has grown in determination and grit,” offered Schultz. “We have had the taste of success from winning our district championship last year. Because of that, our expectations are higher throughout this season. Knowing we have that level of confidence and talent, adds to the fun of playing alongside my teammates.

“When I look at our team I see a hard working group of players and coaches. Every single one of my teammates is capable of making big contributions to our team. Younger players have stepped up to fill important roles and returning players continue to be an asset in our team. Coach Vivian and all our coaches have a great balance of keeping their expectations high and creating a family atmosphere that is enjoyable to be a part of. With what we can do all together, I don’t doubt that this team can play far into the season.”

Throughout the rest of the season, Schultz plans to play a key role.

“I hope I can set an example of a team player who comes to win,” she stressed. “I also will work to get on base and score, and do whatever it takes to back up our pitcher in the field.”
