Rodburg, Wu earn medals
Freedom tennis players Noah Rodburg and Eric Wu earned Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament medals after placing second and third, respectively, on April 16 at Freedom.
At No. 1 singles, Rodburg won his first match of the day against Liberty’s Ben Blum, 8-1, before defeating Emmaus’s Chris Stone, 10-3.
Rodburg faced Parkland’s Derek Yao in the final, but lost, 10-1.
“Noah played a really good semifinal match. He actually beat the kid from Emmaus who won districts last year, and he played a fantastic match,” said Freedom coach Matt Potts. “He came out a little flat, I thought, against Derek from Parkland. I don’t know if Noah left everything on the court from the semifinal or if Derek played so well, but a really good tournament for Noah.”
At No. 2 singles, Wu won his first match of the day against Easton’s Nick Ressler, 8-3, and lost to Emmaus’s Nick Stone, 8-2.
Wu proceeded to win the consolation match against Liberty’s Luke D’Angelo, 8-5, for the third-place medal.
“Eric did a good job of playing a tough kid in the semis, Nick Stone, who ended up winning (first place),” Coach Potts said. “But then he did a really good job of coming back and playing Liberty, who, they just had a real long three-setter two days ago. I thought that was gonna be a really tricky match for him because [D’Angelo’s] pretty solid, but Eric did a good job.”
Oscar Avila put up a good fight at No. 3 singles in his opening match against Parkland’s Kevin Yao but lost, 8-5.
The District XI Class 3A singles tennis tournament is scheduled to be played this week when Rodburg will compete as the top seed along with Wu, who is seeded ninth, and Avila will be an alternate.
