Liberty wins EPC tennis tourney

Liberty’s boys tennis team won gold medals in all doubles matches and at No. 3 singles after competing in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament on April 16 at Freedom.

The No. 4 doubles match between Liberty’s Gio Piccini and Thomas Horvath versus Parkland’s Noah Elijovich and Matthew Huang was the last to finish in high winds and cold temperatures.

“We were up, 6-3, and then I don’t know what happened, and they came back, 6-6,” said Horvath.

Piccini said that’s when the nerves started to kick in.

“Noah’s serve was really strong, so when we beat him there, it turned things around for us,” said Horvath. “Relief that we didn’t have to go to a tiebreak.”

Piccini and Horvath won the match, 10-8, as well as the semifinal against Northampton, 10-6, and the quarterfinal against Freedom, 10-3.

“It was really difficult playing tennis, but Coach Conrad always has us out in windy conditions and prepared for situations like these,” said Piccini.

At No. 3 doubles, Connor Ohl and Finn Brown won gold medals after defeating Emmaus’s Cole Stuchko and Saj Uppiretia (score unavailable).

Ohl and Brown won their first match of the day against Easton, 8-5, and their second match against Allentown Central Catholic, 10-5.

At No. 2 doubles, EJ Powers and Micah Steck won their final against Parkland’s Jack Chu and Jacky Zhang (score unavailable) before defeating Northampton, 10-2, and winning by forfeit against Freedom.

“We’ve been undefeated in doubles all season except one match against Parkland at 4 doubles,” said Liberty coach Chris Conrad. “We practiced yesterday, and I think we had 30 to 40 mph wind gusts, so we were very purposeful in getting them out and having to deal with the wind.”

Liberty freshman Erik Peterson won the EPC tournament at No. 3 singles with victories over Nazareth’s Shivan Arora, 8-4, Central’s Thomas Dzik, 10-3, and Parkland’s Kevin Yao, 10-3.

“I want to give a shout-out to Dave Kurvink, who’s a Liberty alum, who did a program called Kids Play Tennis, so Erik started there, and we inherited Erik into our program, so he’s really stepped up and played some good tennis for us,” Conrad said.

The District XI Class 3A singles tennis tournament is scheduled to be played this week when Peterson, Luke D’Angelo, and Ben Blum will compete.
