Jenkins has high hopes
For Hamaad Jenkins, it is getting to be the time to look for the prize down the road.
The Catasauqua junior went to the state meet last season in the 200, and he is optimistic that he can return in that event - as well as the 100. Jenkins also likes he and his teammates’ chances in the 400 and the 1600 relay teams.
Jenkins ran the 100 in 10.9 at the firs meet of the season, and it has proved to be a motivator.
“I’m running the 100, and it’s a very quick race where every step needs to be right,” said Jenkins. “I ran a 10.9 first meet, and that was a huge confidence booster. I’ve been pretty consistent around that time.”
In the 200, Jenkins hit 22.3 this season, and he needs to keep self-motivated.
“The 200 is my best race,” added Jenkins. “I have great top end speed, so that’s why I went to states last year for it, if I keep running how I am now, I am on track for a four-event states trip.
“I don’t feel like I have had a lot of competition in the 200. If someone is pushing me, I feel I can run a great time.”
In the relays, Jenkins runs the anchor, and he is confident his teams can make some noise.
“We haven’t run our best times yet in the 4x100,” said Jenkins. “In the 4x400, we ran a 3:36, which is good because last year, we didn’t run that time until leagues. We feel we can go to states in both races.”
Head coach Kyle Rusnock has cherished all of Jenkins’ moments.
“We are lucky and blessed to have an athlete like Hamaad on our track team,” beamed Rusnock. “He currently has the top 100 time in the league at 10.9, and one of if not the fastest 200 times with a time of 22.3. He also runs the 4x100 and 4x400 which are tops in the league as well.
“Hamaad is one of those athletes you love to route for and are happy for with his success. He is a dedicated athlete and has trained during the offseason and in the winter with coach walker. Hamaad always gives 100-percent at practices, listens to his coaches and does the extra stuff all the time. We are super excited to see what Hamaad can do the rest of the season and in the post season. States is the ultimate goal for him once again after qualifying in the 200 last year.”
