Northampton pool passes on sale starting May 1

At the April 17 Northampton Borough Council meeting, Councilwoman Judy Haldeman, building, land and recreation committee chair, reported on upcoming recreational and other activities in the borough.

Season passes for the municipal swimming pool will go on sale beginning May 1. Haldeman added all season passes are sold only at the Northampton Recreation Center, 1 Lerchenmiller Drive. At a previous council meeting, it was mentioned the pool will have some upgrades and a fresh painting.

Ronald Glassic, council vice president and chair of the public works and sewer committee, said the public works employees have been working on the municipal swimming pool, preparing it for the upcoming pool season.

Haldeman said the annual document shredding event, hosted by state Rep. Zach Mako, R-183rd, is set for 10 a.m.-noon April 26 at Northampton Banquet and Event Center, 1601 Laubach Ave.

She noted all applications to be a summer worker for the borough are due as soon as possible.

Haldeman also provided an update on the egg hunt, held last week at Municipal Park. She said the egg hunt was a success.

Steve Urban, wastewater treatment plant operator, requested retirement after 26 years of working in the borough, effective June 30. Council accepted Urban’s request, with all of council and the mayor thanking him for his quality work for many years.

Northampton Borough’s animal control officer, Beth Smith, submitted her letter of resignation from her position, effective May 1.

Borough Manager Brian Welsko requested council appoint the borough’s bookkeeper, James Mehnert, be appointed as the borough’s treasurer. Council agreed and appointed Mehnert to be the treasurer, in addition to his bookkeeper duties.

Police Chief Bryan Kadingo received council permission to send two police officers to attend the International Police Mountain Bike Association certification course at Allentown Police Academy. The course will be June 23-27 at a cost of $250 per officer.

Central Assembly of God, of Bethlehem, received council permission to reserve both pavilions and the band shell Sept. 7 for a church service and other activities. They received a waiver of the rental fees.

The trauma program at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg received council permission to use the borough’s portable restroom for the Regroup and Ride event May 31. LVH will be charged the labor rate for a public works employee to monitor the restroom.

St. John the Baptist Church, Northampton, requested permission to use the borough’s band trailer Aug. 31 for its annual picnic. They will be charged $450 for the rental, delivery and setup fee. They will also provide a certificate of insurance naming the borough as additionally insured.

In his code and police committee report, Councilman Trevor Stone said certified rental registration notices were sent out to all property owners who did not respond by the due date of March 31. A $25 late fee will be assessed.

Stone also added code enforcement will begin to enforce grass and weed regulations on all properties in violation of the ordinance, starting May 1.

In her fire and health committee report, Councilwoman Bonnie Almond noted applications are being accepted for the fire department summer camp, planned for July 7-11.

Almond said the fire and police departments will hold their annual golf tournament at Whitetail Golf Club in Bath May 3. Registration starts 7 a.m. For more information, visit northamptonboro.com for the details found in the spring borough newsletter.

Glassic noted a concrete pad was poured by the falls at the edge of Canal Street Park. This will be the location of a Bigbelly solar trash compactor that is being donated to the borough. The trash compactor may be installed within a couple weeks.

Mayor Anthony Pristash said there is a Meet Your Mayor and Managers event, set for 4-6 p.m. April 29 at the Gin Mill and Grille, 1750 Main St., Northampton. He urged council and the general public to attend.

Welsko reported the borough’s street sweeper broke down and is not repairable. He plans to contact companies for costs of a new sweeper, lease options, delivery time for a new purchase and other details. Another option would be to ask for assistance from other municipalities that have sweepers to get through this year.
