Alburtis to pursue a small water and sewer grant
The Alburtis Borough Council met April 9, to approve a range of agenda items.
The meeting was called to order 7 p.m. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Public comment opened the floor for residents to speak. There were no comments from non-council attendees; however, Councilman Mehmet Birtek expressed his disdain for the current U.S. administration’s tactics on deportation.
Following this, council welcomed Dave Pryor, representing Dream Come True of the Lehigh Valley, who shared plans for an upcoming charity bike ride in the borough.
Chris Greb, with the Macungie Ambulance Corps, presented the organization’s annual report, highlighting key service statistics and continued support for the Alburtis community.
Council then approved the minutes from the March 26 meeting and authorized payment of the current bills submitted for review.
Following approvals, council heard reports from borough officials and the police department.
Mayor Kathleen Palmer did not have a report for the evening. Police Chief Tony Alsleben submitted his department’s monthly report, showcasing the crime statistics for the previous month within the borough.
This was followed by the treasurer’s financial update and a report from the borough engineer, although no comments were made.
The monthly Macungie Ambulance Report highlighted 14 calls to the borough of Alburtis during March.
Lastly, the Lower Macungie Fire Department presented first quarter statistics on emergency response and community outreach.
In new business, council approved a request to purchase materials necessary to repair the third base fence at the local recreational field. The borough also voted to move forward with the Pressure Reducing Valve Project, authorizing the plan to be advertised for bids.
Council passed Resolution 2025-2, which authorizes Borough Manager Stephen Nemeth to execute all documents and agreements with the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Financing Authority. This action will allow the borough to pursue funding through the Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program grant, aimed at supporting critical infrastructure upgrades.
With all items addressed, the meeting was adjourned. The next borough meeting will take place 7 p.m. April 30.
