Two local Knights of Columbus councils are organizing a cornhole tournament to benefit Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative and the Diocese of Allentown Ecumenical Soup Kitchen.
The event will be held May 3 at Egypt Memorial Park, Hillcrest Lane and Curt Simmons Drive. Planning is underway by the St. Joseph the Worker Council 10921, Orefield, and Queenship of Mary Council 4050, comprised of six parishes in Whitehall, Coplay, Northampton and Catasauqua.
This is the second year for the cornhole tournament, where as many as 48 two-person teams will compete. New this year will be two different brackets — one for competitive players competing for cash prizes and another for those who play socially competing for gift cards.
Teams can check in and practice 10 a.m. The tournament begins 11 a.m.
Prizes will be given to the top three teams.
Rising River Brewing, based in Macungie, will offer its craft beer varieties for purchase.
Organizers stress the day promises fun for the whole family. There will be food; ice cream by King Kone, Whitehall; snacks; and other beverages for purchase. Cornhole boards will be set up for kids who want to hone their cornhole skills. The park’s playground will also be open.
There will be raffle drawings and gift basket raffles as well.
Teams can register to compete by downloading the Scoreholio app on their mobile phone or by contacting John Fitzpatrick at 484-201-9188 or jlfitzpatrick83@gmail.com.
Sponsorships are available by contacting Fitzpatrick or Jim Molchany at 484-809-6339 or jzam@verizon.net.
All those planning to attend, as players or fans, are encouraged to bring a canned or boxed food donation.
