Kids scramble for eggs
Rainy weather greeted the volunteers at the Coplay Fire Department April 12, the day of the fourth annual community egg hunt. It was to be held on Coplay’s Saylor Field near the Giant Foodstore, with the Coplay Social Hall, at 165 Cherry St., open to serve refreshments after the hunt.
Overnight rain made for a very muddy Saylor Park, prompting the rain-or-shine event to be relocated to the social hall.
The kids and parents were enthusiastic for the indoor egg hunt. The social hall was jammed with smiling, energized egg hunters seeking to scoop up as many candy-filled eggs as they could. The kids were also wide eyed when they saw the Easter Bunny.
Fire Chief Joe Britt, of Coplay, was on hand until there was a call during the event that required Britt and a few firefighters to respond. Volunteer Skye Dunstan was buzzing around like a spring bee, helping where needed at the indoor event.
There were four distinct hunts, with two in the social hall and two in the fire hall garage. The firetrucks were parked outside to accommodate the space needed for the indoor event.
The crowded social hall and garage had kids and parents surround the perimeter of the rooms before each of the four hunts. Volunteer firefighters poured a barrel of eggs for each event that rolled all around the floor. When the egg hunters got the signal, there was a lively scramble for the plastic eggs, loaded with candy.
There were so many eggs that a few were crushed under the little feet during each hunt.
The Coplay Fire Department team was clearly delighted with the turnout and grateful for its team’s work and the large turnout on a challenging weather day.
