Village at Houser’s Crossing becomes stop on Reading Blue Mt. and Northern Railroad
The Village at Houser’s Crossing has made history as the first-ever private flag stop on the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad, the only one of its kind in the United States.
According to a Carbon Chamber and Economic Development press release, this rare distinction allows overnight guests to board the train directly from the Village’s private railroad crossing and enjoy a scenic, stress-free ride into Jim Thorpe, bypassing the town’s often challenging parking situation.
Guests will depart from The Village 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and return at 5 p.m., giving them ample time to explore the historic town, shop, dine, and experience Jim Thorpe’s many attractions.
In 2024, The Village at Houser’s Crossing was officially designated as an Anthracite Cultural Landmark, further cementing its place in Pennsylvania’s rich industrial and railroad history.
It is the last known anthracite and railroad patch town still in existence, preserving the legacy of Pennsylvania’s coal and rail heritage.
Set against the backdrop of 3,400 acres of Pennsylvania State Game lands on Wildcat Mountain, with the Little Schuylkill River flowing through the property, The Village at Houser’s Crossing offers a truly unique escape.
This flag stop is exclusive to overnight guests.
When booking accommodations online, guests will have the option to purchase round-trip train tickets to Jim Thorpe.
Additionally, their ticket includes access to a deeply discounted fare for the 1 p.m. Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway departure, offering even more value to their stay.
More than just a historic site, The Village at Houser’s Crossing caters to a diverse range of guests, including tourists, business travelers, and wedding parties.
With its proximity to popular wedding venues in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, it’s a favorite among bridal parties and out-of-town wedding attendees.
Locals also turn to The Village when hosting visiting family and friends, knowing it offers a welcoming, comfortable, and memorable stay.
“The Village at Houser’s Crossing is more than just a place to stay — it’s an experience,” Owner Carolee Smith said.
“Where else can you sleep in a restored anthracite-era patch town, step out your door to board a historic train from a private railroad crossing, and ride through Pennsylvania’s stunning landscapes?
“It’s an unforgettable journey, and one that guests return to again and again.”
With its rare history, unparalleled access to nature, and now a first-of-its-kind partnership with the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad, The Village at Houser’s Crossing is a destination like no other.
