Salisbury clubs make an impact on and off campus

Salisbury High School clubs are making great impacts this April with exciting events, big wins and great opportunities. From promoting safe driving awareness to competing in academic tournaments, Salisbury students continue to thrive.

On April 2, STARs Club members attended the Lehigh Valley Youth Conference at Lehigh Valley Health Network - Jefferson Health Center on Mack Boulevard.

The event focused on the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of staying focused behind the wheel. The day kicked off with breakfast and an engaging trivia session on impaired driving. Students participated in icebreakers to connect with members from other schools, followed by a poster showcase highlighting STARs’ efforts throughout the year.

The club also presented a powerful video promoting safe driving habits. To end the event on a high note, students enjoyed a fun raffle before heading back to school, more informed to make safe choices on the road and share what they learned with others.

STARs Club adviser Kelly Butterbaugh continues to lead the group in promoting healthy, positive changes in Salisbury High School.

The debate team is heading into an exciting finish as they prepare for finals. While final placements won’t be announced until April 10, the team is currently holding strong in first place. If they tie for the top spot, a debate-off will determine who advances. This scenario occurred last year where they won the debate-off and went on to win at finals.

Semifinals have been promising so far, with team member Phoebe Ballek sharing, “We’re looking to maintain our position.” Finals are scheduled April 24 with coach Michael Barna recently celebrating his 900th career win. The team is pushing forward with confidence and skill.

From April 10–14, a select group of students will attend the annual Model UN trip to Cornell University. This four-day conference brings together the best and brightest to compete in fast-paced committee sessions, debating global issues and developing solutions. Beyond the conference rooms, students will explore Cornell’s campus and enjoy scenic hikes through the Cornell Botanic Gardens, including views of the area’s famous waterfalls. The trip is known for being both busy and memorable. Led by adviser Tanya Kennedy, this opportunity is reserved for top-performing students who demonstrate outstanding dedication and skill in Model UN.

As spring continues, Salisbury’s clubs are keeping spirits high with events that promote leadership, awareness and school pride. Whether it’s advocating for safe driving, competing in intellectual challenges or representing the school on a prestigious university campus, Salisbury students continue to make positive impacts.
