Patriots are off to hot start
Freedom is enjoying one of their best starts in recent volleyball memory and the Pates hope to keep it rolling.
Freedom has run through their early season competition, getting off to a 7-0 start and sweeping six of those opponents.
Head coach John Yanek knew this year’s group would be good, but didn’t know they would start off this hot.
“I knew we’d be good, but not this early,” said Yanek. “I couldn’t be more pleased. We had a rough schedule to start. Two weeks with two tournaments and seven matches. The players were mentally prepared and focused.”
Undefeated starts can sometimes be inflated with some teams based on competition, but Freedom’s major feather in their cap in this run to validate their potential was beating Parkland in five games last week.
The Trojans are always the standard in EPC play and being able to squeeze out a win over them shows that Freedom start isn’t a flash in the pan.
With only a match against Whitehall (4-1) this week, Yanek and company have another chance to take down one of the conferences perennial contenders.
“I believe that club volleyball helped,” said Yanek on what’s helped his group come together this year. “All the starters played club. Also their focus and drive this year. They have set goals and want to achieve them.”
On the other side of the spectrum, Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic are still looking for their first wins of the season after dropping their first four matches.
Liberty has Notre Dame Green Pond (1-5) and Allen (5-2) this week with their eyes on ending their opening skid, while Becahi faces Pocono Mountain West (0-4), Pocono Mountain East (2-4) and Dieruff (4-2).
