LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Liberty, Freedom leading the way early on in EPC

Liberty and Freedom are both leading the charge on the baseball scene after two weeks of action, with both teams jumping out to 4-1 marks on the spring to sit atop the EPC standings and the District 11 6A power rankings.

Both teams are undefeated in conference play with their only blemishes coming in nonconference action.

Liberty suffered their first loss of the season over the weekend in an 8-6 defeat at the hands of Hazleton. It was the most runs the Hurricanes allowed to date this season.

Head coach Andy Pitsilos knows quality games against top programs like Hazleton will help his group down the road, on their quest to defend their league and district crowns.

“The kids are playing well,” Pitsilos said. “We’ve won games we should win in convincing fashion, and we’re fortunate to beat Beca, Whitehall, and Northampton, three good teams. I expect this if the kids we have each year can play fundamental baseball and adapt to our style of playing baseball. They put in the work, and have great attitudes and that’s why we have started fast.”

Freedom started the season with an opening day 1-0 loss to Abington Heights but have rattled off four straight wins, holding off Easton last week for a 5-4 victory.

Head coach John Bisco is happy with how the team has started the campaign, but knows there’s still a long season ahead.

“The start of the season I am happy with, but there is 75 percent to go and there is a lot we can improve on,” Bisco said. “This has been expected of this group. Like I said earlier, there is a lot of baseball to be played and you don’t win any championships in March. We have to keep our heads down and continue to grind and get better everyday.”

Both teams get back into action this week as Freedom takes on Central Catholic, East Stroudsburg North and Pleasant Valley.

Liberty has Emmaus and Pocono Mountain West.

Freedom’s showdown with the Vikings will be one to watch, as Central is undefeated at 6-0 and sharing the league lead with both Bethlehem schools.

Liberty gets a chance to further separate themselves this week with a contest against the 4-1 Hornets on Tuesday.

Bethlehem Catholic (3-4) looks to get some consistency this week, as they have games against Whitehall and Northampton.

The Hawks lost over the weekend to Berks Catholic 14-12 and saw a tougher outing last Friday in an 11-1 defeat to Nazareth.
