Girls look to grow this season
Coming off their district championship last season, Whitehall’s softball team anticipates a season ahead with growth and maturity along the way.
Through their first two games this season, the Zephyrs routed Dieruff, 19-0, before they dropped a 6-5 decision to Liberty. They currently sit at 3-3 so far this season.
Head coach Jeff Vivian has liked what he has seen so far from his team.
“Against Dieruff we looked good and we able to get some younger players in to experience some varsity time,” said Vivian. “It was nice to get contributions from up and down the lineup.
“In the Liberty loss, we let it slip away. We have played great in the first part of the game gaining at 4-0 lead. (Pitcher) Morgan (Laub) looked great on the mound, challenging hitters. Bella Muth had a timely hit to drive in a couple of runs.
“As the game wore on we just had some mental and physical errors that led liberty cut the lead to 4-2. Alyssa Dunbar hit a double, and Josie Shultz smacked a single that extended the lead and gave us some room, but ultimately we just didn’t close it out. A catch that we like to have back in right that would have ended the game, but we allowed Liberty to get to the heart of the order which ultimately let them take the lead on a two-run homer.”
Laub has thrown 13 innings and has allowed 18 hits, struck out seven, walked five, and posted a 3.65 ERA. Dunbar was hitting .600 and Muth was at .333 with a team-high six RBIs.
Laub, Evelyn Hudak, and Audra Sommer all were both hitting .500, and Nya Brown was at .400.
Vivian is confident his team can continue to develop. Beginning Wednesday, the Zephyrs were scheduled to meet Parkland, Stroudsburg, and Pine Grove.
“We’re seeing some things that’s part of being a young team,” offered Vivian. I have liked our response and how we have carried ourselves. And I think we will learn from that taking that into Parkland, Stroudsburg, and Pine Grove.”
