Fines established for parking breaches

Alburtis Borough Council met for its regular meeting March 26 with council members President Ron DeIaco, Vice President Steven Hill, Second Vice President Hector Moss, Chad Atkins, Ashlynn Rivera and John Alesczyzk, joining Mayor Kathleen Palmer, Borough Manager Stephen Nemeth, Police Chief Tony Alsleben and Solicitor David Knerr.

The meeting started by allowing public comments to be presented; however, none were made.

Council approved the minutes from the March 12 meeting and authorized the payment of outstanding bills. Palmer did not have a report for the evening, as she said things were quiet in the borough at the moment.

Council then approved the fiscal consultant’s report, detailing the borough’s current financial situation.

During the new business segment of the meeting, council reviewed and accepted Ordinance No. 595. Ordinance Number 595 led to changes in Chapter 41 of the Alburtis Codified Ordinances which governs traffic control. The ordinance ensured specific state parking restrictions matched local borough violations permitting their inclusion in the borough’s ticketing system for immediate payments.

The amendment established a $50 fine for handicapped parking breaches settled within the 10-day grace period. The measure is set to create uniform enforcement while encouraging adherence to parking rules.

Next, council discussed the 2025 borough road projects, which detailed milling and overlay work to improve road conditions. Specifically, the plan is to improve Fifth Street and widen crosswalks in the borough. The borough will pursue grants to accommodate the costs.

Council next addressed the yard waste facility, with Rivera stating she wanted to change her vote and open the facility, while also having the borough pursue building a fence around the facility. Council seemed agreeable to that idea. Several discussions ensued on the various options of guarding the facility, dumpster pickup, cost to residents, etc.

Ultimately, council approved the motion stating they will continue to pursue costs and options. Council will still need to decide on several action items about the facility at future meetings.

A recommendation was presented and approved to award the borough sanitary smoke testing project to Utility Services Group for a total project quote of $37,875. The project aims to test the system’s performance and address any underlying issues following recent updates. The borough will also pursue a grant to pay for this project.

The meeting also covered park and recreation matters, specifically the replacement of a damaged slide at one of the borough’s parks. Council authorized the repair, ensuring the equipment would be restored to safe, usable condition for the community. The borough’s insurance provider will cover the cost.

The meeting was adjourned with all business addressed. The next meeting will be held 7 p.m. April 9 at 260 Franklin St., Alburtis.
