Parkland swim teams get set for state meet
A large contingent of Parkland swimmers and divers will be competing at Bucknell University this weekend in the PIAA Class 3A Championships.
The Trojans have 12 individuals and five relays teams that will swim or dive for a state medal this weekend.
Sophomore Sydney LaBaugh and the girls 200-yard medley relay team hold the highest seeds for the meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium.
The District 11 champion Parkland girls medley relay team of Milla Hahn, Baylee Kish, Kelsey McPeek and LaBaugh earned the No. 3 seed for states at 1:44.57. Wilson-West Lawn holds the top seed at 1:42.57 with Upper Dublin seconds at 1:42.77.
LaBaugh is seeded fifth in backstroke at 56.27. The top seed, Mount Lebanon’s Sylvia Roy (52.53) holds a three-second margin over the second seed in girls 100-yard backstroke. LaBaugh is also seeded 12th in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:52.70.
McPeek, a junior, also holds a top-8 seed for states. She’s seeded 8th in 100 breaststroke at 1:04.25 and will also swim in the 50-yard freestyle as the 20th seed (24.32).
Parkland junior Johanna Cook is seeded 11th in diving with a score of 393.15 from districts, while Hahn, a junior is seeded 20th in 100 butterfly (57.68) and 26th in individual medley (2:09.76). Kish, a freshman, is seeded 27th in backstroke (58.74).
Parkland’s girls 400-yard freestyle relay team is seeded 21st for states at 3:38.36.
In boys events, the Trojans will swim in all three relays and have three individuals qualified in two individual events each with four others competing in one individual event.
The Trojan boys 400 freestyle relay team, which took second at districts with the foursome of sophomore Jacob Piccini, junior Thomas Price, senior Pedro Teran, and sophomore Dominic Faenza, is seeded seventh for states at 3:08.54.
Senior diver Bradley Kunz holds the highest individual seed for the PHS boys team at 11th (434.5).
Price, Faenza and Teran will each swim in a pair of individual events at states. Price is the 14th seed in 100 butterfly at 50.80 and 20th in 50 free at 21.36. Faenza is seeded 14th in 500 free (4:38.91) and 19th in 200 (1:43.52).
Teran will join his teammate in 200 freestyle as the 23rd seed (1:43.76), while also swimming in the 100 backstroke as the 17th seed (51.48).
Senior Gabe Krizel qualified for states as the 20th seed in backstroke (51.87), while Piccini will compete in the 100-yard freestyle (23rd seed, 46.89) and senior Michael Toth (28th see, 4:45.42) will join Faenza in the 500 free.
Parkland’s boys 200-yard medley relay team is seeded 15th for the state meet with a time of 1:35.39, while the 200 free relay is seeded 18th at 1:26.88.
The state meet includes preliminary heats and finals. The top eight fastest times in prelims earn a place in championship finals, while the next eight fastest times advance to consolation finals and can earn team points, but can finish no higher than ninth place regardless of their time compared to championship finals times. Medals go to the top eight finishers in each event.
