Hornet swim teams prepare for state meet

A group of Emmaus swimmers and divers will finish the season this weekend at the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University

Eight individuals and five Hornet relay teams qualified for the event, which will be held Friday and Saturday in Lewisburg.

Senior Griffin Messenlehner holds the team’s top seed individually and as a relay member.

The Emmaus boys 400-yard freestyle relay team is seeded fifth for states at 3:07.83. Messenlehner swam that event at districts along with teammates Brady King, Roman Herman and Reid Lovett.

Messenlehner, who won four gold medals and the Swimmer of the Meet award at districts, is also seeded sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.78.

King, a senior, holds the 18th seed for states in the 500 freestyle (4:41.15). Senior Julian Vlaeminck is seeded 21st in butterfly (51.15). Herman, a junior, is seeded 26th in 100 freestyle (47.19) and Lovett, a junior, will join King in the 500 freestyle as the 27th seed (4:45.42)

The Emmaus boys team qualified all three of its relays for states. The 200-yard medley relay is seeded 12th at 1:35.17, while 200 free relay is 25th at 1:27.41.

In girls events, the Hornets have two relay teams qualified, with the 200 freestyle relay seeded 12th at 1:39.01 and the 400 free relay 16th at 3:36.75.

Freshman Keilani Silva qualified for states in two events. She is seeded 24th in 100-yard freestyle (53.20) and 25th in 200 free (1:55.31). Senior Veronica Karboski is seeded 28th in 50 free (24.56) and senior Natalie Cheplick is 31st in 500 free (5:22.55).

The state meet includes preliminary heats and finals. The top eight fastest times in prelims earn a place in the championship finals, while the next eight fastest times advance to consolation finals and can earn team points, but can finish no higher than ninth place regardless of their time compared to championship finals times.

Medals go to the top eight finishers in each event.
