“This is a great opportunity for students, faculty and the public to enjoy a performance by Grammy Award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey and Steinway pianist Natasha Paremski,” says Maria Asteriadou, Steinway Artist and Kutztown University Professor of Piano and Chamber Music.
Zuill Bailey and Natasha Paremski perform, 7:30 p.m. April 1, Schaeffer Auditorium, Kutztown University as part of the Guest Artist Series.
The concert opens with Bailey’s solo performance of a cello suite by Johann Sebastian Bach followed by the Handel-Halvorsen “Passacaglia for Violin and Cello,” featuring Bailey and Kurt Nikkanen, KU Professor of Violin and Concertmaster of the New York City Ballet Orchestra.
Composer and virtuoso cellist David Popper (1833-1913) is known for his 1891 masterpiece, “Requiem, Op. 66” for three cellos and orchestra or piano, which has remained in the cello repertoire. Joining Bailey are cellists Sam Ou, KU Assistant Professor of Cello and Music Theory, KU student cellist Alejandro Bolivar and Steinway pianist Natasha Paremski.
Paremski is soloist in selections for piano of Sergei Prokofiev’s 1935 ballet, “Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64.”
The concert closes with Zuill and Paremski in Franz Schubert’s 1824 work, “Arpeggione Sonata in A Minor.” The arpeggione was an instrument of the 1820s which combined features of the guitar and the cello. However, it was only in use for a short period. The composition continues to be standard repertoire for cello and piano.
