Shuck takes over LHS boys team

Liberty will look to retool this spring on the volleyball court after losing some key seniors from a year ago.

Following a 15-6 campaign last season, the Hurricanes also bring in a new coach, as Daniel Shuck replaces Mike Zile at the helm. Shuck was an assistant for two years with Zile and now hopes to make his own mark this year with a group of core returners which includes, Gavin Wachinski (Sr., MH); Daniel King (Sr., S); Frank Benedetto (Jr., OH) and Keagan Dougherty (Jr., OH).

Newcomers are Shane Jones (Sr., OPP), Bruce Nunez (Sr., L) and Mason Strawn (So., MH).

“We have lost a few seniors who were able to produce a lot of points for us last year, but we have been able to gain a lot of talent with our rising players,” said Shuck. “We will need to focus on staying calm and concentrate on our strengths when faced with adversity.”

Liberty is off to an 0-2 start on the year, losing to Parkland and Whitehall. The ‘Canes look to get back on track this week matches against Easton and Pocono Mountain East on deck.

“We’re looking to hone our skills to tighten up our defense,” Shuck said of the team goals. “We want to create a powerful offense around all areas of the court and qualify for districts and EPC tournaments.”
