‘The Little Mermaid’ set to make a splash

An underwater love story washes up on stage with “Disney’s The Little Mermaid,” to be performed 7 p.m. March 27, 28, 29 and 2 p.m. March 30 in the auditorium at Whitehall High School, 3800 Mechanicsville Road. Fascinated with life on land, a mermaid princess dreams of trading her fins for legs to win a prince’s love.

With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and book by Doug Wright, the musical is based on the 1989 Disney animated film of the same title, which was based on the Danish fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen published in 1837.

The 2008 Broadway production received two Tony Award nominations.

Production numbers include “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” “Les Poisson,” “Her Voice” and “Kiss the Girl.”

The cast of the Whitehall High School production includes Lila Mensher (Ariel), Andy Alulis (Prince Eric), Benito Ortiz (Sebastian), Davey Dangler (Flounder/Ensemble), Alyse Collier (Scuttle), Ava Kneller (Arista), Sanaah Reed (Aquata), Benjamin Unangst (King Triton), Lorena Elsiefy (Ursula), Jaelynn Caraballo (Flotsam), Emily Wilson (Jetsam), Matthew Nakhlah (Chef Louis) and Elian Zamir Ng Suarez (Grimsby/Ensemble).

Additional cast members include Chiann Jackson (dance captain/Adella), Cristal Perez (Attina/featured dancer), Averie Wechsler (Allana/featured dancer) and Mia Millen (Andrina/featured dancer).

Aidelice Martinez Estrella, Maddy Schin, Anya Bogucki, Mackenzie Gery and Amelia Martinez Esetrella are members of the ensemble.

Director Cara Craft is assisted by choreographer Melissa Zimmer, assistant choreographer Gio Failla, assistant director/vocal director Elaine Ramirez, assistant vocal director Ben Stefan and technical director Alex Witcher. Set construction is by Braedyn Zappe and Addison Snyder. Costume design is by Scaramouche Costumes, Laura O’Donnell, Allison Bortz and Evelyn Unangst.

Orchestra director Michael Tanzos conducts the following musicians: Daniel Smale, John Huie, Johanna Reisteter, Liam Mulligan, Nico Kresge, Madison Apple, Anna Pimentel, Steve Reisteter, Kyle Hummel, Kyle Hernandez, Austyn Venanzi, Mikayla Vangelo, Ben Kern, Grace Kemmerer and Mariam Omar.
