Recycled products used on set

Whitehall-Coplay School Board’s Feb. 24 meeting began with updates from Whitehall High School Student Council’s president.

For the high school’s spring musical, students will be presenting “The Little Mermaid.”

“The Little Mermaid” will be performed 7 p.m. March 27, 28 and 29 and 2 p.m. March 30 at WHS, 3800 Mechanicsville Road. To purchase tickets, visit cur8.com/16049/project/129426.

When building the set, the theater department used mainly recycled products, which were donated by the public. This is to help spread awareness for reducing plastics in oceans.

Student Council is also hosting events for students to participate in for March Madness, such as open mic basketball, board games and yoga.

The meeting continued with a presentation from students at Steckel Elementary School about their kindergarten buddies at Gockley Elementary School. Between the three elementary classrooms within Whitehall-Coplay School District, Gockley Elementary students are paired with Steckel Elementary students, so they can bond and do activities together. Some of the students from Steckel stepped up to the podium and gave their thoughts on the program.

“My favorite part of kindergarten buddies is seeing their cute faces and having fun with them and reading with them and crafting with them,” said one student.

Another said, “My favorite thing about having a kindergarten buddy is that I can make friends with them and I will be sure to be careful with them.”

The school board also met March 10. The meeting began with a presentation about the electrical window project at Whitehall-Coplay Middle School and Steckel that will take place over the summer. The schools will be getting electrical upgrades. The entire electrical distribution equipment will be replaced. That includes everything that feeds the panels, the switch gear, the transformers and the emergency generation equipment. As far as window replacement, the existing single pane exterior windows will be replaced. Every window will have an operable piece to it.

New window shades will also be installed.

Whitehall High School Principal Dr. Peter Mayes gave a presentation about Global Travel-Based Learning through EF Tours. Mayes wants to give students the opportunity to learn abroad. The presentation went through the history of EF Tours, how students could get involved, chaperones, fundraising and more.

WCMS and WHS teachers were contacted about whether or not they’d be interested in going. Nine high school teachers and four middle school teachers have said they are interested in participating.

“It’s meant to do two things: it’s, one, to get kids traveling and, two, eating together, dining together, exploring together — doing a lot of amazing things,” Mayes said.
