North Catasauqua: Food bank seeks ham donations for Easter holiday

With the Easter holiday approaching, Catasauqua Area Food Bank, 527 Front St., is accepting ham donations. Donations may be dropped off during open hours, 3-4 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.

Additional items that are especially needed include pasta, cereal, soup, rice, stuffing, instant potatoes, granola bars and peanut butter crackers. Monetary donations are also accepted.

North Catasauqua Fire Department Charotin Hose Company’s annual fund drive is underway for 2025. Residents should have received a letter and donation form in the mail.

The fund drive helps support and provide services from the borough’s volunteer fire department. Donations are tax-deductible.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 122 Union St., Catasauqua, will be holding a basket social, 5-7 p.m. March 28, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. March 29 and 9 a.m.-noon March 30.

Tickets will be on sale at the door, and you do not have to be present to win. The kitchen will be open.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the CCD program.

Don’t forget to pick up your pierogi orders from Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association’s sale 2-6 p.m. March 28 at St. John Fisher Roman Catholic Church, 1229 Third St.

Pierogies will be sold the day of the event in very limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis. Only cash or check will be accepted.

The 2025 garbage assessment/trash invoices are due March 31.

The borough office would like residents to know the 2025 borough trash and recycling calendar with J.P. Mascaro and Sons can be found on the borough website at northcatasauqua.org.

Catasauqua Community Thrift Shop, 113 Bridge St., will be holding a half-price sale March 31-April 5 on everything in the shop.

Regular thrift store hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Shop volunteers are happy to accept donations of clean used clothing, household items and toys during store hours.

Proceeds from the shop are returned to the community through contributions that support youth and adult programs and services.

The next North Catasauqua Borough Council meeting will take place 7 p.m. April 7 in the basement-level meeting room at borough hall. The meeting will be hybrid, with both in-person and virtual options.

Shop for books at the Public Library of Catasauqua’s used book sale, set for 3-7 p.m. April 11 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 12 in the community room, 302 Bridge St., Catasauqua. Donations of gently used books can be dropped off during regular business hours: 2-7:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.

Items that will not be accepted include encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, VHS tapes and soiled or torn books.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church will be holding a grab-and-go ziti dinner April 11. Orders will be ready for pickup any time from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the parish center kitchen. Orders and payment are due by April 4.

The North Catasauqua and Catasauqua fire departments’ annual Easter egg hunt will take place April 12 at North Catasauqua William J. Albert Memorial Park, 701 Grove St. The event, for children ages 10 and under, starts noon.

North Catasauqua Porter Chapman Lodge, 1103 Sixth St., is holding an all-you-can-eat breakfast and Easter egg hunt April 12. Breakfast starts 9 a.m., and the hunt begins noon.

Presbyterian Church of Catasauqua, 210 Pine St., will hold a free community lunch 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. April 21 at the church. The free community lunch is given out to folks in the community with food insecurity or those who could use a helping hand.

The church is also accepting donations for the Roughie Pantry. The pantry is currently accepting shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, body wash, tampons, sanitary napkins, etc.

The borough will be having an electronics recycling day 4-6 p.m. April 23 at the public works complex, 1460 Main St. The event is open to North Catasauqua residents only.

St. John Fisher Roman Catholic Church, 1229 Third St., is sponsoring a Kauffman’s BBQ takeout chicken dinner. The dinner includes half a chicken, baked potato, coleslaw and cookies. Pickup will be 4-6 p.m. April 30 in the church parking lot.

Order forms are available at the church, or you may order by calling the church office at 610-264-1972. Orders are due by April 20. There is a cost.

The borough office reminds residents the 2025 real estate tax bills sent in February were mailed out with an error. A revised bill was sent out. The borough tax bills were incorrectly printed with last year’s millage rate on them. The tax rate for 2025 is 17.0 mills vs. 16.5 mills in 2024.

Payments can be made at the address on the bill or dropped off in the secure drop box at borough hall or brought to the borough office, 1066 Fourth St.

Also, the discount period for the bills has been extended to May 4.

Due to banking issues, any checks for Catasauqua Area Food Bank or Catasauqua Community Thrift Shop must be made out to Catasauqua Community Partnerships Inc., or CCPI. The food bank and thrift shop are under the umbrella of the Catasauqua Community Partnership.

The bank will not accept checks written to the food bank or thrift shop and the checks need to be sent back and rewritten.
