Teaching is in my soul

I’m 85 years old. But you already know that. I have been reading “Tuesdays with Morrie” in the tear-stained copy from our beautiful library on beautiful Church Street. This beautiful book is about a man in his late 30s who re-connects with his favorite, most influential, but dying college professor, whom he hasn’t seen since graduation.

The man begins a series of weekly class-like visits as his old mentor willingly succumbs to the slow, inexorable ravage of Lou Gehrig’s disease. The subject of their conversation is the meaning of life. They speak of family, aging, forgiveness, fear, among other topics – and death.

Morrie dies after their 14th “class.” He recently revealed what he wants on his tombstone: “a teacher to the last.” I like that. Morrie makes a good choice. Morrie is proud of his life work, now ending.

I taught lovingly for over 50 years, and since retiring I have continued unofficially teaching through several writing projects. Like Morrie, teaching is in my soul. But such a final sentiment is not for me. I’ve decided the words on my tombstone are “I begin, therefore I am.” I see death as a door opening.

Take that, Mr. Death.
