LHS girls lacrosse looks for breakout
Liberty returns plenty of experience this year on the girls’ lacrosse team and the Hurricanes hope that can translate into more wins this spring.
Coming off a 6-12 season a year ago, Liberty returns 10 starters.
Returning players this season are Ava George (Sr., Defense); Abigail Mayes (Jr., Defense); Erika Broesicke (Jr., Goalie); Ellis Corr (Jr., Midfield); Julianna Zumas (Jr., Midfield); Amber Leshko (Sr., Midfield); Christina Bozakis (So., Midfield); Lily Medaska (So., Attack); Olivia Romero (So., Attack); Sarah Stein (Sr., Defense); Sarah Heidecker (Jr., Attack) and Karlyn Hottenstein (Sr., Attack).
Freshman Elizabeth McClarin also figures to have a role on the roster this season.
“One of the strengths of this team will be the junior class as they have been contributing to the team since they were freshmen,” said head coach Sam Weinert. “Their experience and consistent performance will help set the tone for the team. Our seniors maturity and the sophomores athleticism will only add to the juniors strengths. Another strength is this team gets along both on and off the field. They have worked to build a foundation of trust, communication and support.”
Corr led the team with 44 goals last year and Broesicke tallied 148 saves. Medaska and Bozakis each scored 21 goals a year ago.
“This season the coaching staff has been pushing the girls to believe in themselves as a team and individuals,” said Weinert. “We are going to take each game, one at a time, and focus on the present, not the future. The team has put a lot of work in the off season and built great team camaraderie. The team wants to improve our record and beat some teams who we were competitive with last season.”
