Bethlehem Catholic’s girls basketball team won its second-round game in the PIAA Class 5A state playoffs against Gwynedd Mercy Academy, 53-38, before losing its quarterfinal against Archbishop Wood, 69-35, on March 15 at Reading High School.
Becahi’s game against Gwynedd Mercy on March 12 at Norristown High School was a rematch from last year’s state playoffs.
“We knew a lot of their sets, so the girls were very comfortable coming into the game,” said Becahi coach Arnold Alleyne. “They were able to call them out and read them, so that really helped us defensively. I added plays to what we already do.”
Becahi freshman guard Palin Coleman gave the Hawks a first-quarter lead with seven points.
“I work really hard outside of practice, trying to train every day, and that’s what helps me translate into games,” Coleman said.
Aliyah Brame had a 10-point second quarter, helping to put the Hawks ahead, 32-14, at halftime.
“Coach says all the time, if you’re not getting looks, don’t force it,” said Brame. “In the second quarter, things opened up. I had my shots, and it was just time to hit them.
“They’re a very scrappy team. They came back and cut the lead, so I’d say they play great defense, and they adjusted well in the second half.”
Brame scored the first three points of the quarterfinal against Archbishop Wood, but from there, the Vikings took over, making 17 triples in the game.
Leah Ault was Becahi’s top scorer with 10 points.
