NASD facilities committee discusses naming rights

What’s in a name? Possibly lots of money.

With Northampton Area School District facing millions of dollars in maintenance and improvements costs, notably for its sports and performance venues, and looming deficits, including $3.7 million in the 2025-26 district budget, the board of education facilities committee is considering naming rights.

Replacing the artificial turf field at Al Erdosy Stadium is estimated at $1 million, according to Jonathan Jenny, NASD director of operations.

The field was refurbished in 2015 when Northampton Area Middle School opened. An artificial turf football field has an eight- to 10-year lifespan, according to the website for IdealTurf, an artificial turf company.

“I know a lot of fields have gotten sponsors. That’s a way to cut costs,” Jenny said at the March 17 facilities committee meeting.

“I’m open to that. I think we should investigate it,” school Director Brian McCulloch, facilities committee member, said.

The Northampton Area High School Pete Schneider Gymnasium needs a new public address system, as does Al Erdosy Stadium.

“We’d like to have the sound system done before graduation,” Jenny said.

The NAHS Class of 2025 graduation ceremonies are set for 7:30-9:30 p.m. May 30 at Al Erdosy Stadium. The rain dates are May 31 and June 1.

Konkrete Kids varsity football team home games are played at Al Erdosy Stadium, named in 1969 after legendary Northampton football coach Albert “Al” Erdosy (1913-88). The field surface was dedicated in 2018 in honor of Lou Wolf, who succeeded Erdosy.

Basketball, wrestling and volleyball games are held in the NAHS Pete Schneider Gymnasium, named in 2014 after Schneider (1919-96), former NASD teacher and basketball coach who played on the 1937 football team, the undefeated “Wonder Team.” The gym court was named in 2015 after Bob Nemeth, NASD teacher and the Konkrete Kids’ winningest boys basketball coach.

Examples of Lehigh Valley sports and entertainment venues with naming rights include Allentown’s PPL Center, Coca-Cola Park, Miller Symphony Hall and Baker Center for the Arts at Muhlenberg College; Bethlehem’s Zoellner Arts Center and Stabler Arena at Lehigh University and Foy Concert Hall at Moravian University; and the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts at DeSales University in Upper Saucon Township.

Replacing the NAHS auditorium stage curtains, lighting and sound system is estimated to cost $600,000, Jenny said.

“The lighting system is shot. They rent lighting and part of a sound system,” Jenny said, referring to NAHS theater productions presented in the auditorium. “The high school auditorium has been on the list for three years.”

It was noted there is concern the high school auditorium stage curtains might come down, as they are original from when the high school was built in 1963.

The school has been renovated, starting in 2004, with additions completed in 2009.

“You’re looking at $100,000 (to replace the stage curtain),” Jenny said.

The estimate is from three years ago, he added.

“They have a fire rating. It’s custom-made curtains,” Christopher W. Haller, CHA Consulting Inc. project manager, said at the meeting. “That’s the only auditorium in the district. The auditorium is used almost every night.”

“Can we get a range of estimates?” Director Ross Makary asked.

Jenny and Haller said NAHS auditorium upgrades and prices could be obtained and presented at the next facilities meeting, set for 6 p.m. April 21 in the NAHS library conference room.
