Catharine “Kitty” S. Dunn

Salem UCC preschool program founder

Catharine “Kitty” S. Dunn, 98, of Bethlehem and formerly of Catasauqua, died March 5, 2025, at home cared for by her family. She was the wife of the late Rev. H. Stanley Dunn for 51 years.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Harold E. and Malinda (Shaub) Smith.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Hood College in 1947 and earned a master’s degree from Lehigh University in 1975.

She was the founder and director of the Salem United Church of Christ preschool program for many years. She was also a guidance counselor for Sheckler Elementary School for 16 years, before retiring in 1992.

She participated in many church activities, volunteered for CASA and AARP taxes, sang in the Bach Choir and Lehigh University Choral Union, ushered at Musikfest and at the Zoellner Arts Center and was a Girl Scout leader, poll worker and bell choir director.

She is survived by a son, David H. and wife Karen of Bethlehem; two daughters, Malinda K. of New York City and Melanie M. Dunn-Chadwick and husband Ken of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren, Leann Kennedy and husband PJ, Amanda Erney and husband Tom, Bryce Chadwick, Drew Chadwick and Beverly Chadwick; five great-grandchildren, Marshall Kennedy, Cayden Kennedy, Orion Erney, Melissa Erney and Zionnah Allen; and a sister, Martha Sperandio of Florida.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Melissa L. Kinder; and three sisters, Ann, Helen and Barbara.

There will be a calling time 10-11 a.m., followed by a celebration of life service 11 a.m., May 3 at Advent Moravian Church, 3730 Jacksonville Road, Bethlehem.
