As the federal government proceeds with actions to locate undocumented individuals, Superintendent Dr. Mark Madson wrote a letter to Parkland families explaining the school district’s position on outside agencies seeking to enter the schools looking for students who do not have legal status as citizens.
“As your superintendent, I want to assure you we remain focused on our mission to serve every child who walks through our doors,” Madson wrote. “Our primary responsibility is to educate and support all students.
“It is vital every student feels safe, valued, and able to learn without fear or judgment.”
He reported the administration consulted with its legal team to ensure procedures are aligned with federal, state and local law.
Madson noted that under the U.S. Constitution, public schools must teach all students free of charge, regardless of whether they are undocumented.
The superintendent said students do not have to present any proof of citizenship to attend public schools.
Schools are not allowed to inquire about a student’s immigration status and may not deny enrollment to anyone with a birth certificate from a country other than the United States.
“We have a legal and ethical obligation to protect the privacy of our students,” Madson continued. “Immigration status is not information we collect or disclose.
“Any inquiries from outside agencies will be directed to the school principals, who have received guidance on managing immigration issues.”
Madson said students will not be released to anyone other than individuals and emergency contacts authorized by their families.
Realizing students may be experiencing fear, stress, and anxiety over immigration concerns, the superintendent stated counselors are available in every building to meet with them.
The superintendent provided a final comment on the matter.
“Our unwavering commitment remains clear — providing a safe and welcoming environment where all students can thrive,” Madson said. “Our shared dedication to our students and their well-being is what truly unites us as a community, and it is this unity that will help us move forward together.”
