Edward P. Johnstone

loved skydiving

Edward P. Johnstone, 87, of Allentown, died Jan. 16, 2025, at his residence.

He and his wife, Mary T. (Fellin) Johnstone, were married 37 years.

Born July 16, 1937, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harold and Ruth (Weaver) Johnstone.

He was a manager at the former Lehigh Valley Dairy before retiring.

Before that, he worked at Yoplait and Procter and Gamble in Michigan.

He faithfully and honorably served his country in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army during a peacetime era.

His love of skydiving led to the formation of an aerial team with his brother, Bill, performing more than 500 jumps and acrobatics throughout Ohio.

His years in Michigan were full of adventures with his children camping, snowmobiling, hiking and fishing.

Active in the life of his church, he was a devoted member of St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Orefield, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.

He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 10921 and a faithful member of the Men’s Group.

His love of the Eucharist led to the start of daily Eucharistic Adoration at the parish.

His sense of adventure was infectious, his love of nature and the outdoors lasted from his childhood through his later years of hunting for morel mushrooms in the woods, gardening, growing his celebrated dahlias, traveling out West, and his eagle eye for birds.

He was a man of great faith and fearlessness, a trustworthy and loyal friend and neighbor.

His joy and exuberance for life was only surpassed by his deep faith and belief in the glories of Heaven.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by children Kathy Swoboda (Paul) of New Mexico, Art Johnstone (Carol) of Florida, Julie Johnstone of New York, Becky Walz (Jim) of Ohio; siblings Harold Johnstone (late Carol) of Ohio, William Johnstone (Stephanie) of Ohio, Patsy Cordova (Luis) of New Mexico, Scott Johnstone (Mary) of Ohio; brother-in-law Joe Puricelli of Missouri; grandchildren Matthew, Nick, Alec, Nathan, Lane, Sam, Drew, James, Davis, Valerie and Natalie.

He was predeceased by his siblings Helen (late Ben) Cerimele, Tom Johnstone and Ruth Puricelli.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. March 14 at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, 1879 Applewood Drive, Orefield.

The Rev. (Fr.) Francis Iroot will be celebrant.

Private interment will follow the Mass at Resurrection Cemetery, Wescosville.
