BETHLEHEM social calendar March 12

HI NEIGHBORS: Hi Neighbors is the speakers program offered by First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 2344 Center St., Bethlehem. The program for Monday, March 17, will feature John Drabic, from Penn State Extension, sharing tips and strategies for dealing with animal pests. He’ll share ways to recognize damage and provide controls that can be used. The program, which is free and open to all, begins with a social time at 9:30 a.m. with the presentation starting at 10 a.m. The series runs through May 12 (no program April 21). MESS NIGHT: The 48th annual Bethlehem Detachment 284 Marine Corps League Mess Night March 29 honors the Citizen of the Year Nancy Smith, a Gold Star Mother and honorary member of Detachment 284 of the Marine Corp League.

Nancy has been an integral part of the veterans’ community in Lehigh Valley for over five years. Nancy and her husband, Brian Smith, lost their son, Joshua, to PTSD after he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mess Night is a traditional military dinner featuring military traditions and good-natured fun, all designed to raise money to support the Marine Youth Program and scholarship programs.

Mess Night begins at 5 p.m. at West Coplay Meannerchor, 3326 N. Ruch St., Whitehall. Attire is MCL or military uniform or business uuit, business casual

Bethlehem Detachment 284 is a member of the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council, all of whom are encouraged to attend.

ART CAMP: Thankful for the support and generosity of Moravian University, ArtsQuest Summer Art Camps will take place on their South Campus while the ArtsQuest Creative Factory powered by PPL is being built. Moravian University’s South Campus is located at 346 Main St. in Bethlehem.

ArtsQuest Summer Art Camps run from June 11 to Aug. 15 and offer eight weeks of fun and engaging art-making classes and activities for children ages 4-18. Camps for ages 4-9 are on sale now, and Studio Intensives for ages 10-18 will go on sale in early March. Parents can register their campers for a full or half day of camp to suit their needs. Early drop-off and extended hours are also available.

Young artists (ages 4-9) will explore new themes each week, learn and practice fundamental artistic skills and discover a variety of materials and processes. Older campers (ages 10-18) will explore mediums in greater depth through Studio Intensives.

ArtsQuest welcomes everyone to participate in summer camp regardless of financial circumstances. Scholarship assistance is available based on financial need. Please submit scholarship applications no later than May 30, in order to use scholarships toward Summer Art Camp.

HERITAGE GALA: The Moravian Historical Society’s 18th annual Share the Heritage Gala Saturday, April 5, at the Northampton County Club will honor Charlene Donchez Mowers with the annual Heritage Award.

Donchez Mowers has dedicated more than two decades of work that culminated in July 2024 when Bethlehem became one of four Moravian church settlements inscribed together as a UNESCO transnational World Heritage Site.

The annual gala, the museum’s primary fundraiser, features cocktails, dinner and both a silent and live auction.

NIHM EVENTS: Join industrial artist Vaughn Randall for a live demonstration of a biodiesel fueled iron melting furnace March 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Foundry Park in front of the National Museum of Industrial History. Return at 7 p.m. for a second iron pour at SteelStacks with artist Coral Lambert and Paul Higham.

Using renewable resources and recycled metal, Randall will melt iron and pour it into molds, creating works of art. Guests are invited to view the entire process, from lighting the furnace to tapping the liquid metal, and discuss the process with Randall and his volunteer helpers.

In conjunction with the annual Steel Weekend event, 19 remarkable women of Bethlehem Steel share their experiences working in the plants, offices in a March 15 2 p.m. film screening. The screening of the Women of Steel documentary is followed by a panel discussion with several female former Bethlehem Steel employees.

Sculptor Coral Lambert will use her portable iron furnace to melt and cast hot iron stars in the shape of the city’s Bethlehem Star March 15 at 7 p.m. in front of the Bethlehem SteelStacks. Digital pioneer Paul Higham will accompany the performance iron pour with a composition of industrial sounds sampled from the environment.

Celtic Cultural Alliance hosts the 13th annual Celtic Classic Parade of Shamrocks. The parade steps off at 1 p.m. on Broad Street, continues east on Broad to Main and south on Main Street, ending under the Hill-To-Hill Bridge.
