Scott earns 100th win
Jesse Scott always dreamed of becoming a 100-win varsity wrestler.
After his first season at the high school level the dream turned into a goal.
It turned into reality last weekend when the Hornet senior won three matches at the District 11 Championships, including his 100th and 101st career victories.
“I knew it would take four consistent, well-rounded seasons,” Scott said. “At the end of my freshman year when I got 20 wins I was like ‘OK, this is possible.’ Coach Thad Smith, who was head coach at the time, was someone who believed in me a lot. He told me I’d be the next 100-match winner.”
He’s the first Emmaus wrestler to reach the 100-win milestone since Caden Wright in 2020.
Scott is 28-12 this season (101-12 career) and took second place at districts to earn a spot in this weekend’s PIAA Northeast Regional Championships.
After winning 20 matches as a freshman, Scott won 23 as a sophomore and 30 last year.
His 100th win came against Northampton’s Devlin Chevere, a 17-2 technical fall in the quarterfinal round of the district tournament last Friday night at Liberty High School.
“It was an awesome feeling,” said Scott. “And I’m super-blessed and super-grateful that I got to represent Emmaus for these last four years, and that I was healthy and got to compete. It’s a big blessing to get that 100th win. It was a cool feeling and I’m grateful for all the people who came out and supported me and who got me to this point.”
Scott has a chance to add a few more wins this weekend and with a top-five finish in regionals he will advance to the state tournament and get to finish his high career at the Giant Center in Hershey.
It’s something Hornet head coach Jim Best would love to see from one of his team leaders.
“I’ve known Jesse since he’s been at the high school level,” said Best. “He’s the type of individual that does the right things, makes the right choices. He lives a lifestyle we’d all like our children to live.
“To see him have that success at that level, one hundred wins in the state of Pennsylvania is an incredible accomplishment. Him getting to the district final in the process was the icing on the cake. The job is not done for Jesse Scott. He has aspirations to get in the top five next week and get himself out to Hershey.”
The Hornets have been on an upward trend as a program the last few years and having student-athletes like Scott on the team is one reason for it.
“It’s like having another assistant coach in the room,” said Best. “He’s encouraging the younger kids not only to follow his example in the type of lifestyle that he lives, but also just putting in the time and the effort into the sport of wrestling if they want to achieve high levels.”
Scott’s enjoyed his individual success at the high school level and will go on to compete at Franklin and Marshall College next year. But he’ll keep an eye on his former teammates from his new home at F&M.
“My goal is to leave Emmaus wrestling in a better place than when I came in,” Scott said. “Hopefully I made a positive impact. I think they’re going to do some great things in the next four year. Being in the room and being around the people and the mentality the coaches preach, I think Emmaus is really heading in the right direction and I’m excited to see where they’re going to go.”
