Outside shooting leads girls to win over Rovers
The Parkland High School girls basketball team hit fire from beyond the arc after a slow first quarter and blitzed Easton from the second quarter on to win the District 11 6A championship game 54-28 last Friday night at Whitehall High School.
It is the second straight district gold for the Trojans (19-8 overall) and third in the last four seasons.
The fourth seed drilled nine 3-pointers in the game, eight of which came after the opening quarter and, defensively, held the second-seeded Red Rovers (20-6), their opponent in last year’s district title game, at bay for most of the game.
Easton started fast and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and led 9-6 late in the first quarter, but Parkland finished it out to tie the score at 11-11 after one.
Sarah Car opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to give her team their first lead of the contest at 14-11. After the Red Rovers answered with a long distance shot of their own, Parkland went on a 13-0 run to turn a tie game into a 27-14 lead. Chilcote followed Car’s three with her own 3-pointer with 4:30 left in the second quarter to increase the lead to six points.
“I knew they played zone,” said Chilcote. “I knew I was going to have to shoot more than I normally do, more out of my comfort zone. I worked on it at practice a lot yesterday. So, I was really comfortable with it.”
Aneri McGalla drained a jumper with 3:56 left in the second quarter to make it a 22-14 advantage. After a 3-pointer by Chilcote with 3:32 remaining in the first half, Hallal went 2-for-2 at the line to increase the advantage to 13 points.
Chilcote had four 3-pointers. McGalla and Addison Fritzinger both made two 3-pointers each and Car added one.
“I think that just shows how dangerous we are,” Chilcote said. “We’re really deep, our bench. We had a lot of different people contribute. It was really balanced scoring, which we always love to see. I just think that shows how talented we’re going to be in the future.”
After Easton scored the first three points of the third quarter, the Trojans went on a 9-0 run to make it a 39-20 advantage. McGalla and Fritzinger hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the Parkland scoring stretch. The Trojans scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to open up a 24-point lead with 5:28 remaining. Chilcote connected on a 3-pointer to close out the run for Parkland.
Chilcote finished with a game-best 15 points and McGalla tallied 10. Each of Car and Hallal contributed nine points and Fritzinger added eight.
It was the same result in the same game with the same two teams last season, and that followed with a Trojans run to the PIAA state semifinal round. They are looking for a similar outcome this season, with a few more wins in the end. Parkland will host District One’s nine seed, Downingtown West on Friday at 7 p.m. at Parkland High School.
“We had the same outcome [in districts as last year],” said Chilcote. “I think we can definitely have the same outcome in states if we have the same mentality. Just got to keep working on the little things that build up to the bigger thing.”
