NWL’s Slaski, Wozniak are Bucknell-bound

Northwestern Lehigh High School might not have a pool or a swim team, but that hasn’t stopped several swimmers from competing successfully in high school swimming and earning their way to the state championships.

Tiger senior Hunter Skalski won the 100-yard butterfly at last weekend’s District 11 Championships. He swam the event in 53.08 to beat Blue Mountain’s Brody Moyer (54.93) by nearly two seconds. Slaski also took second place in the 200-yard freestyle at districts with a time of 1:46.84.

Freshman Olivia Wozniak earned a pair of medals in her first District 11 Class 2A Swimming Championships, which were held Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School.

Wozniak won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.37. She cruised to the win by a comfortable margin as Pottsville’s Adalia Laselva was second in 1:04.05. Wozniak also placed second in the 100-yard individual medley at districts, swimming the event in a time of 2:14.32.

The Tigers’ Aiden Braadt competed in boys 200 IM at districts and finished fifth, one place short of earning a medal, with a time of 2:09.45.

Slaski and Wozniak automatically qualified for states with their event wins, but could also earn their way in if their times in the runner-up finishes are fast enough compared to other swimmers at district meets across the state.

The state championship meet will be held March 12-13 at Bucknell University.
