Moya reaches NE Regional
Two Parkland wrestlers made it to the medal stand last weekend at the District 11 Championships.
Junior Jorge Moya finished fifth last Saturday at Liberty High School to advance to this weekend’s PIAA Northeast Regional Championships, while teammate Donato Ciampittiello finished sixth at districts and will be an alternate for regionals.
Moya dropped his first match of the tournament and battled his way back through the 160-pound consolation bracket to earn a spot in the fifth-place match against the same wrestler who beat him in the first round on Friday night.
“Had a rough first day,” Moya said. “I lost to [Devlin] Chevere from Northampton first match, came back and beat him. I thought it was a good win to bounce back from the first day.
“I was excited to get another shot because I knew I didn’t wrestle too good the first match. It’s always the first match that gets me. I came out on top in the end. That’s all that I care about.”
Chevere beat Moya 9-5 in the opening round. The Trojan then pinned his first opponent in consolations and won his second match by forfeit. He earned a 13-9 win by decision over Stroudsburg’s Leonard DeMaria before losing to Notre Dame’s Keegan Ramsay in the consolation semifinals, sending Moya to the fifth-place match.
In the medal round, with a berth into regionals on the line, Moya took a 3-1 lead in the second period. He led 3-2 heading into the final two minutes and stretched it to 7-2 before winning 9-6.
“He rebounded from [the early loss],” said Parkland head coach Eddie Keichel. “He wrestled his way back through and overcame adversity and beat someone he lost to earlier in the tournament. At this point it’s win and advance, do what you have to do to get to the next weekend and regroup from there.”
Ciampittiello, a freshman who entered the tournament as the 15th seed at 145 pounds, won his first three bouts to reach the semifinals.
“I just feel like seeds don’t really matter because the match always starts at 0-0,” he said.
Ciampittiello won a pigtail match to get into the first round, then dispatched of No. 2 seed Aidan McNulty of Bangor with a 3-0 decision.
After a major decision win over East Stroudsburg North’s Brandon Roca in the quarterfinal round, Ciampittiello lost 6-0 to No. 3 seed Jared Gonzalez (Notre Dame). He dropped a 3-1 decision in consolation finals before another setback in the fifth-place bout.
“Donato Ciampittiello came into the tournament with a losing record,” said Keichel. “He made the semifinals and placed sixth. He was a 15 seed. That’s impressive.”
Parkland finished 12th in the team standings at districts. Keichel was hoping to get more wrestlers into regionals, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Liberty.
“We were hoping to advance quite a few more,” said Keichel. “Some underperformed. Some other guys over-performed. It’s a learning experience. We learn what we learn now and take it into the offseason and the weight room.”
A couple Trojans who over-performed at districts were Chase Kruk and Jared Santilli.
Kruk, a sophomore, was seeded 15th at districts and opened the tournament with a match against eventual 114-pound champ Willmont Kai (Whitehall). After a loss to Kai by technical fall, Kruk won a pair of consolation bouts and was one win away from reaching the medal round when he was eliminated.
Santilli, a sophomore who was seeded 10th, won his opening bout before falling to No. 2 seed Tanner Berkenstock (Notre Dame) in the quarterfinals. He won his first consolation bout by technical fall and was edged 1-0 by No. 6 seed Carter Smith (Bangor) in his second consolation bout, coming one win away from reaching the medal round.
The Trojans dual meet season ended a few weeks ago with a 11-5 overall record. They finished eighth in the District 11 rankings and reached team duals.
“There was only one match where I could say we didn’t wrestle well,” said Keichel “We competed in all our matches. The effort was there.
“We posted three more wins than we did from the year before. We’re just looking to keep improving. It’s a process, keeping the kids buying in, the right kids being the leaders in the program and having everybody fall in line with what needs to be done. I’m confident we have a good program between our youth, our junior high and the high school. There’s a lot of good stuff coming from Parkland in the next couple years. I’m excited for it. We’re going to keep getting better each year. That’s the goal.”
Just three of the 13 Parkland wrestlers that competed at districts graduate in June, leaving the team with a large core of returning wrestlers next year.
