Kroope earns D-11 wrestling gold

One of Olivya Kroope’s goals this season was to set an example for her teammates and be a leader on a young and inexperienced team.

She did that, and earned some titles along the way.

Kroope took first place Sunday in the 155-pound weight class at this year’s girls wrestling District 11 Championships. The junior advances to this weekend’s PIAA Southeast Regional Championships where the top four wrestlers in each weight class earn a trip to the state championships in Hershey.

“If I don’t, for whatever reason, do well at regionals, I’ll be OK with it,” said Kroope. “Because going into the season my goal was to set the standard for my team and my school and I think I did that today.”

Kroope, who was the top seed at 155 with a 19-0 record heading into the tournament, cruised through her first two matches with first-period pins. She downed Stroudsburg’s Lynette Johnson in a 36-second quarterfinal match before putting Parkland’s Natalie Deutsch on her back in 1:37 in the semifinals to earn a spot in the final against Northampton’s Mylea Lambert.

Lambert’s only loss this season came to Kroope in the title bout of the East Penn Conference Championships. The Konkrete Kid senior pinned Kroope twice last season before things went the other way this winter.

“We have a lot of respect for Mylea,” said Emmaus head coach Thad Smith. “We knew going in [Kroope] just had to wrestle her match and good things would happen.”

Kroope caught Lambert with a deep half nelson early in the second period and heard the mat get slapped at the 3:12 mark.

“For the pin it was pretty simple,” said Kroope. “I just did a standard half nelson. I managed to sink my arm in deep enough and I had her right there. It was pretty natural.”

After fourth-place finishes at both leagues and districts last year, Kroope barged up the podium this season to take both postseason titles with two more yet to be contested.

As a young wrestler she once dreamed about wrestling for a state title. Now, she could have the chance if she finishes in the top half of the eight-wrestler bracket this weekend at Quakertown High School.

She said consistency is the key to success this weekend.

“I have a really good set of coaches and I think I have a lot of raw talent,” Kroope said. “I just need to hone that and wrestle smart and be consistent.”

While she has one more year and will benefit next year from all of this year’s postseason experience, Kroope plans to stay in the moment at regionals and potentially states.

“I want to wrestle this year like it’s my last year,” she said.

Hornet senior Katherine Soto-Acuna took fifth place at districts, going 2-2 in the event. She is one of just two seniors that took the mat for Emmaus at districts and one of just three on this year’s roster.

Emmaus had three freshman, six sophomores and two juniors join a pair of seniors at districts. The Hornets finished 13th out of 28 teams in the district tournament. Easton won the tournament’s team title with 189.5 points. Parkland was second at 179.5 with Pocono Mountain East third at 127. Emmaus finished with 63 points.
