As the District 11 swimming championships approach, swimmers attempted to improve upon their previous times in events this season in an effort to qualify for districts at Saturday’s 32nd Annual Last Chance Meet at Emmaus High School. While setting a personal best time does not guarantee swimmers a spot in districts, it does improve their chances. The seeding for districts is based on the top times from throughout the season and there is a maximum of 24 swimmers allowed to compete in any event. In addition to that, swimmers are limited to competing in two individual and two relay events at districts.
In the freestyle events, Maddy Roberts had a nice day. The freshman dropped 0.26 seconds from her previous best when she finished the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.16 seconds and in the 100-yard freestyle, shaved more than a second from her previous best of 1:01.60 to get down to 1:00.25 for a qualifying time. Sophia Harmon finished the 50 freestyle in 25.16 seconds, down from 25.55 seconds which she swam against Freedom during the dual meets.
A pair of freshmen swimmers improved in other events. Ella Shucavage cut 3.33 seconds off of her previous best in the 200-yard freestyle to reset her time to 2:13.94 going into districts. In the 500-yard freestyle, Reagan Coffey’s time of 5:47.79 was an impressive 7.63 seconds better than her previous best time.
District 11 Diving Championships will be held Saturday at Emmaus High School and the Swimming Championships will follow the next weekend at Parkland High School. In district competition, divers and swimmers are competing for spots at the PIAA meet at Bucknell University in March.
