EHS boys swimmers compete in 32nd LCM

High school swimmers who had not qualified for districts had one more opportunity to meet the standard last weekend.

The 32nd annual Last Chance Meet took place this past weekend at Emmaus High School as swimmers look to either reach a qualifying time or improve on times they have set earlier in the season.

While most swimmers set personal best times at the meet, that does not guarantee them a spot in districts. The seeding for districts is based on the top times from throughout the season and there is a maximum of 24 swimmers allowed to compete in any event.

Swimmers are limited to competing in two individual and two relay events at districts, so coaches need to do some jockeying to keep some of their swimmers under that limit.

The following Emmaus swimmers had the highest improvement on their times on their way to setting a personal best in an event.

In the freestyle events, Reese Wunderler swam the 50-yard freestyle in 23.16 seconds to shave more than a second off of his previous time. The 100-yard freestyle saw Julian Vlaeminck cut his qualifying time from 50.08 down to 48.69 and Matt Sirignano move from 51.50 seconds down to 50.57 seconds in the LCM. Ridley Hartman also improved on his time in the 200-yard freestyle when he finished with a mark of 1:55.72, down 0.48 seconds from his previous best.

The 100-yard breaststroke could provide coach Tim O’Connor with some difficult decisions. Aaron Kenny (1:05.53), Evan LaRussa (1:05.59), and Parker Gamler (1:05.92) all improved on their times and finished very close to each other. The 100-yard butterfly saw both Griffin Messenlehner and Brennan Smith cut time off their previous personal best finishes. The senior moved from a 50.87 down to 49.57 seconds, while Smith, a sophomore, shaved 3.4 seconds from his previous best to finish with a 56.53 on Saturday.

In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Goob Schaeffer finished with a time of 1:02.87 down from 1:06.48 that he swam against Easton during the dual meet season. Junior Will Reichart had a previous best of 2:12.41 in the 200-yard IM and slashed that down to 2:09.26 for his final qualifying time.

District 11 diving championships will take place Saturday at Emmaus High School with the girls diving in the morning session and the boys diving in the afternoon. The following weekend is the district swimming meet.
