Cook, Schultz finish 2-3 at D-11 Diving

Parkland High School had four girls diving in the District 11 3A championship on Saturday at Emmaus High School and saw two of them battling for the silver medal and a spot in next month’s PIAA diving championship at Bucknell University.

Johanna Cook earned the silver medal in the competition to earn a spot at states. Teammate Samantha Schultz finished third.

The 11-dive competition saw 16 divers from 3A schools compete with two spots at states up for grabs. In addition to Cook, Freedom’s Hayden Taylor earned a spot when she took gold with a score of 485.40 and Cook finished at 393.15.

Last season Cook finished third and just missed the trip to Bucknell, but redoubled her efforts to get to states this season.

“This is definitely a step up from last year and I’m pretty excited about it and looking forward to going to states,” said Cook, a junior who will make her first trip to Bucknell as a junior. “My teammates did great, and I am super proud of everybody; it was a great meet.”

In addition to Cook, a trio of sophomores competed for the Lady Trojans and saw Schultz finish third with a score of 358.90, Addison Dietrich was seventh with a mark of 319.50 and Mariya Young was 12th posting a score of 285.30.

While Cook will be new to diving at states, she has talked to teammates like Brad Kunz who have been there before and has an idea of what to expect when she gets to Bucknell. Kunz will be joining her on the trip after he finished second in the boys’ competition.

“My 2 ½ was my best dive of the day. I scored pretty good on it and better than I usually score and it helped me today,” said Cook. “Coming in I worked on pretty much of my precision stuff. I’ve had all the dives that I did today for a while, so I was working on really nailing everything and making sure they were the best they could be.”

State championship will be held March 14 at Bucknell University.
