Boys swimmers repeat; girls team wins fifth straight district crown

The Parkland High School swim teams swept the District 11 Championship meet for the second straight year.

The Trojan girls team won its fifth straight district team title, while the boys won its first back-to-back crowns since 2003-04, which was part of an 8-year district title streak.

Parkland won five of eight individual girls event and one relay. Sophomore Sydney LaBaugh and junior Milla Hahn both won two events in the girls meet, while sophomore Kelsey McPeek won one event.

The Trojan boys team had two individual event winners in Thomas Price and Dominic Faenza, while it also won one relay.

All of Parkland’s individual gold medalists said the team title means more to them than the individual wins.

“I care about the team so much,” said LaBaugh. “It’s such a great experience. We have so much fun at practice every day and I know how hard we train. Both teams deserve this so much.”

“We’re all such good friends inside and outside of swimming,” said Price. “We just care about each other. It’s just exciting to see teammates go best times and do things they didn’t think were possible, and get another district win.”

Hahn had the difficult task of swimming two individual events and one relay the same day. She won all three Friday.

Hahn and teammates Baylee Kish, McPeek and LaBaugh opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.16.

Hahn then won the 200 individual medley in 2:09.67 and came back two events later to take first place in the 100 butterfly in 57.68.

“I was trying to break 58 for such a long time and I finally I did,” she said.

Hahn will make her third trip to states, where she will swim six times on the first day of the meet if she gets through preliminary heats in all three.

“I think my first year I had all four events on the same day, so it was more stressful,” said Hahn, who also swam the anchor leg on Parkland’s second-place 400 freestyle relay team at districts along with LaBaugh, Farrah Hahn and Grace Zhang.

LaBaugh also had a quick turnaround for her first event, swimming the 200 freestyle just after the medley relay win. She took first place in the 200 free in 1:52.70 during Friday’s session and won her second individual gold Saturday with a 56.27-second 100 backstroke.

LaBaugh was also named girls East Penn Conference Swimmer of the Year and girls co-Swimmer of the Meet at districts.

“I am very happy,” she said after the meet. “My times I dropped and I’m just very proud of how I performed.”

McPeek earned her individual gold medal in breaststroke, where she swam a 1:04.25 to win gold.

“I was going for a 1:02. I didn’t get it but it’s OK,” she said “I still have the state meet. I think I’m going to drop time and do a lot better.”

Price, a sophomore, earned his win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.80.

“I was feeling good,” he said. “I knew there was some good competition and I was really excited for the race. I’m happy with how it turned out.”

Faenza, a sophomore, was looking to break 4:40 in the 500-freestyle and won the race with a 4:38.91. He took the lead about three-quarters of the way through the race and never relinquished it.

“That was my plan going into the race,” he said. “My goal for the season was to go under 4:40, so I’m pretty happy with the results.

Faenza was also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay with teammates Jacob Piccini, Eric Friday and Doug Bell.

Faenza and Price will make their first trip to the state championships for individual events after swimming on relays at last year’s state meet.

“Job’s not finished,” Faenza said. “There’s a lot bigger competition. Try to go some best times again.”

All district champion individuals and relay teams qualify automatically for the state meet. Other finishers can qualify if their times are fast enough when compared to times from other district meets across the state.

In addition to the gold medals, Parkland had several other swimmers step onto the podium with top four finishes at districts, which were held at Parkland High School.

Earning silver medals at the meet were the boys medley relay team of Gabe Krizel, Ethan Coleman, Price and Bell (1:35.39); boys 400 free relay of Piccini, Price, Pedro Teran, Faenza (3:08.54); girls 200 freestyle relay team of McPeek, Julianne Zaffiro, Kendall Davis and Baylee Kish (1:41.05); Faenza (200 free, 1:43.52); McPeek (50 free, 24.32); Piccini (100 free, 46.98); Zaffiro (500 free, 5:24.61) and Teran (backstroke, 51.48).

Finishing in third place for Parkland at district were Teran (100 free, 1:43.76); Ella Rafeld (IM, 2:18.04); Coleman (IM, 1:58.45); Price (50 free, 21.36); Kenzi Schultz (500 free, 5:24.76); Kish (backstroke, 58.74) and Krizel (backstroke, 51.87).

Trojans who earned fourth-place medals at districts include.

Farrah Hahn (200 free, 2:00.83); Michael Toth (200 free, 1:45.87 and 500 free, 4:45.42); Mazie Fleischaker (IM, 2:18.54); Piccini (50 free, 21.36); Kish (butterfly, 1:00.28); Farrah Hahn (backstroke, 58.83); and Coleman (breaststroke, 59.94).

“I could not be more proud,” said Parkland head coach Allie McPeek. “They work hard, they support each other. They do a tremendous job and I’m so proud of them. I’m so lucky and thankful for the kids and my coaching staff.”

The state championship meet will be held March 13-14 at Bucknell University.
