Boys basketball rolls past Kids in championship

Scott Bauer waited for his opportunity.

And when it came he made the most of it.

Bauer didn’t see a lot of playing time last year as the Trojan boys basketball team made a run to the state title game.

This season as senior he is an integral part of the team. And he had one of the best performances of his career when it mattered most Saturday in helping the Trojans beat Northampton 66-33 in the District 11 championship game.

“Last year I was just waiting for my turn,” Bauer said. “I was behind a great group of guys, state chip run. It’s just about being patient. I knew my time was coming. You’ve just got to stay patient, stay resilient and when it’s there, seize your moment.”

Bauer went 5-for-7 from three-point range while scoring 15 points in the win. He hit three deep balls in the second quarter to help Parkland open a 32-17 halftime lead.

“It’s just team ball,” he said. “It’s just all my teammates setting me up. Great drives, great passes, getting me right in the shooting pocket. All credit goes to them.

“A team plays zone, you have to shoot your way out of it and make them go man. We knew we were going to get wide open shots. It’s just a matter of moving the ball, staying patient, staying disciplined and when it’s there knock it down.”

The game was Bauer’s second 15-point performance in districts as he matched that total in a first-round win over Liberty last week.

“Scotty has been our senior leader all year,” said Parkland head coach Eddie Ohlson. “He’s had an up-and-down year, but finished strong for us when we needed him. That’s what seniors do. He knew he needed to be big tonight. I’m really proud of him because he really stayed positive all year and fought through some tough times and it all paid off in the end.”

Parkland’s TJ Lawrence had 21 points in the district title game. The sophomore hit a three-pointer just 20 seconds into the game and had three steals and two assists while leading the team in scoring.

“He gets the wrap as a football guy, but he’s the ultimate competitor,” said Ohlson. “He knew we needed him big tonight and stepped up to the plate and really delivered for us and I’m really happy for him.” Parkland jumped out to a 9-0 lead while forcing three Northampton turnovers in the first three minutes of the game.

Northampton cut the lead to 13-9 early in the second quarter but never got that close again.

Parkland will host District 1’s ninth-place team, Downingtown West, Saturday in the first round of the state playoffs at 2:30 p.m.

District 11 Semifinals

Parkland (17-9) was the No. 6 seed in districts and after beating No. 3 Liberty in the first round, the Trojans outlasted No. 7 Allen last Wednesday in the district semifinals, 55-49.

Sophomore Blake Nassry led Parkland with 19 points in the win, while point guard Nas Adams had 13 points and Lawrence added 12.

Adams set the tone with three first-quarter steals and six points in the opening frame to help his team take an early 7-2 lead.

“Coaches tell me all the time that I’m the tone setter,” said Adams.

“He’s been getting better and better all season long,” said Ohlson of Adams. “As a former point guard you ride your point guard hard and expect a lot out of him. This season he’s responded every time I’ve asked. He’s kind of the glue guy for us. He gets us moving in the right direction.”

Allen battled back from the early deficit and took a 36-35 lead on a pair of three-pointers in the first minute of the fourth quarter. But Parkland went on 10-0 to take the lead for good.
