Penn State Extension offers backyard stream repair series

Landowners with a stream on their property — or anyone interested in stream bank repair — can benefit from a live webinar series offered by Penn State Extension.

The backyard stream repair series will be offered 2-3:30 p.m. March 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27.

If a landowner’s stream is getting deeper or wider or the property owner is losing land every time it rains, stream bank repair might be needed, according to water resources extension educators.

The webinar series will present a step-by-step process for backyard stream repair. The techniques are meant to be simple and affordable.

Participants will have an opportunity to interact with experts and ask questions.

The series may lead to improved bank stability and reduced erosion, saving property from washing away; added aesthetic property value; a new sense of place and reduced noise; less cost and need for mowing, watering and fertilizing; intercepted and reduced water pollution; and available habitat for many types of wildlife, such as butterflies, hummingbirds, frogs, dragonflies and other creatures.

Each participant will receive a complimentary copy of the full-color manual “Simple Solutions for Your Eroding Backyard Stream” — available for U.S. addresses only.

Registration also will secure participants an invitation to future hands-on field workshops — open only to webinar registrants — to be offered across Pennsylvania as staffing and site availability permit.

Continuing education units will be available for participants attending live sessions. These include credits for the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professionals, the International Society of Arboriculture and landscape architects.

Engineers will have the opportunity to fulfill professional development hours.

Registration is required to receive the link to access the webinars. Participants can register through 2 p.m. March 13.
