NAHS athletic director resigns

Shaun Murray, Northampton Area High School athletic director, has resigned.

NASD school directors accepted Murray’s resignation, effective March 2, by a vote of 9-0 at the Feb. 10 board of education meeting.

“I found out after Christmas (2024) that Mr. Murray was going to broaden his career. He secured another position,” NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik told the board at the meeting.

Interim NAHS director of athletics is Matthew Frailey, who was appointed assistant to the athletic director at the July 16, 2018, board meeting, starting with the 2018-19 school year, and was appointed NAHS assistant athletic director at the Aug. 14, 2023, board meeting, effective Oct. 16, 2023.

Murray has been appointed athletic director at East Stroudsburg South, East Stroudsburg Area School District. Murray was appointed NAHS athletic director, effective Aug. 10, 2015. Before that, for 10 years, Murray was the Emmaus High School assistant athletic director.

“Shaun is one of the best athletic directors in the Lehigh Valley. It’s a big loss for the school district,” Kovalchik said after the school board meeting.

In other business at the Feb. 10 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve the Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School capital project memorandum of understanding between NASD, Bethlehem Area School District and Saucon Valley School District. The BASD Board of Education, at its Dec. 16, 2024, meeting approved purchase of The Factory, 315 Columbia St., Bethlehem, for use as a satellite campus for BAVTS.

The Factory, part of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp., southside plant complex, had become a space for food and beverage startups. BASD purchased the building for $8 million. BASD will be reimbursed for the building purchase by BAVTS. Renovations to the southside facility are estimated to cost $22 million, to be underwritten by the three school districts. The project is less than a proposed $46.6 million expansion of BAVTS’ 3300 Chester Ave., Bethlehem, campus, which will not proceed.

Other NASD Board of Education approvals include:

• BAVTS articles of agreement: The 50-year agreement is between NASD, BASD and SVSD, each of which helps fund BAVTS so the three districts’ students can study. The previous agreement would have expired June 30. BAVTS was founded in 1965.

• Community education classes and instructors with stipends for the spring II session of the 2024-25 school year

• NAHS student activity account — Konkrete Kids Support Our Armed Forces

The NASD Board of Education next meets 6:30 p.m. March 10 in the auditorium at NAHS, 1619 Laubach Ave., Northampton.
