Lambert wins regional title

Last week Mylea Lambert was denied a second straight district wrestling title, but on Sunday at Quakertown she went one step higher securing her first regional title and the coveted berth to the state championships in Hershey.

In the quarterfinal round, she pinned 2-time regional qualifier Annette Barry of Neshaminy in 2:28.

Her semifinal opponent was one she had faced twice before. Lambert had beaten Kaitlynn Arnold of Avon Grove 8-5 in last year’s regionals and pinned her in the blood round at states.

This time around it was a strategically wrestled 7-0 decision to advance to the regional final.

“I wasn’t looking for a pin, I just wanted to win,” explained Lambert. “I wanted to advance and that was the match I need to cement my way to Hershey.”

In the finals, the K-Kid senior took on ChaseMarie Ryan of Quakertown. Ryan had upset Lambert’s nemesis, Olivya Kroope of Emmaus, in the semifinals.

After a scoreless first period, Lambert escaped to start the second. The two wrestlers locked up and as she usually has, Lambert won the battle, throwing her opponent to her back. As Ryan tried to wriggle out of bounds, Mylea held tight for over 30 seconds, gradually improving her position. She was awarded the fall at 3:56.

“The whole match when we were in neutral either she was in an over (hook) and I was in an under (hook) or the other way around. One of us was going to throw it and I think I just had to pull the trigger and capitalize,” Lambert explained.

“This win means a lot to me. I know it’s not like a big, big, accomplishment, but it was also my 50th win in only two years. I think if I could have wrestled two more years, I could have got to 100,” she continued.

Northampton’s other regional qualifier, Dani Glaser, just missed a trip to Hershey by finishing 5th. That represents a step forward from her 6th place finish last year.

“As a group, as a whole coaching staff, we’re just pumped. She had a really good week. Jesse worked a lot with her on her feet to get her moving more. We were very confident coming in that she was going to get the job done. Now we’ll have two weeks to work with her one-on-one and that’s going to be awesome,” exclaimed head coach Joe Tocci.
