St. John’s UCC holds spaghetti fundraiser

A group of happy volunteers greeted the large number of attendees at the Feb. 23 spaghetti meal hosted by St. John’s United Church of Christ, 575 Grape St., Whitehall.

There was a rush of hungry congregants who just received spiritual nourishment at the late-morning church service led by Pastor Steve Davis before receiving physical nourishment at the event. A full-course meal was assembled that included a healthy serving of spaghetti with or without meatballs, dinner roll, salad and a delicious assortment of homemade cakes and cookies for dessert. There was a also variety of refreshments to go along with the meal.

The turnout was expected to be good, with proceeds going to the church general fund.

Colleen Kulhamer, who organized the event, was working in the kitchen. Kulhamer is a hands-on leader unfazed about the risk of getting spaghetti sauce on her clothing. She led her team of Kathy Roth, Barbara Menges, Corrina Schneck and others.

Patrick Sandt, the church’s director of music, handled the donations and payments from patrons. He was cheerful as he talked about the church choir, instrumentalists and the adult bell choir. Sandt noted he is seeking more youth to engage with the musical experience offered by the church music department.

Regina Mohr, a choir member and instrumentalist at the church, was coordinating the centerpieces on the tables at the event.

Pastor Davis sat with his spouse, Bill Castello, and mother, Jackie Maxom, of Emmaus, as they enjoyed the meal.

Fellowship and goodwill was on display throughout the event.

Davis noted the church is planning a Mardi Gras bingo, soup and bread dinners Wednesdays during Lent, an Ash and Dash event in the church parking lot 8-9 a.m. and 4-5 p.m. on Ash Wednesday and a children’s egg hunt noon April 12.

The church also holds activities such as ice cream socials, special dinners and holiday events to serve as fundraisers.
