Holy Trinity, patrons raise funds for pediatric cancer fight

Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua, held a meatloaf dine-in or takeout dinner Feb. 22 in the social hall. The church adhered to its credo of holding dinners to benefit other organizations; the church requests a freewill donation for the dinner.

Proceeds of this dinner are earmarked for Jake’s Dragon Foundation, a foundation that raises funds for the fight against pediatric cancer.

A number of church volunteers assembled in the fellowship room and kitchen to cook and serve the takeout. The meatloaf was accompanied by mashed potatoes, corn, a roll with butter and a strawberry/blueberry parfait.

A steady stream of patrons attended the sit-down dinner, while others dropped in for takeout dinners.

Cheerful church volunteers were Lucy Lynn and Mary Farner, who sold tickets at the event and helped raise donations. In the kitchen were Rick Martson, Pastor Brian Riedy, Vicki and Stephanie Chimics and Joe Wetzel. Several others occupied the role of food distributors, and Lilah and Jennifer Carfara bussed the tables. Another longtime volunteer was Janis Charvala, who occupied the role of diner as she enjoyed the tasty meal served at the event.

They were all happy with providing up to 150 dinners to raise funds for Jake’s Dragon. The volunteers, along with Riedy, noted satisfaction over the collective effort of the Holy Trinity team who just wants to help — in this case, Jake’s Dragon Foundation.

Jake’s Dragon has raised funds to assist many cancer research organizations and clinical trial resources, such as National Cancer Institute, Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Cancer Clinical Trials, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Childhood Cancer Resources, Coalition Against Childhood Cancer, St. Jude and more. Its mission is dedicated to funding pediatric cancer research, as well as helping families cope with the enormous financial burden of pediatric cancer.

The foundation is located in Collegeville. For more information or to donate, visit jakesdragonfoundation.org.

Holy Trinity is already planning its next food event for late March. The organization to benefit from the next meal is to be announced.
