Applications for Artist-in-Residence opens
The East 40 program at Northampton Community College has announced plans for its fifth annual Summer Artists-in-Residence program. The online application process is now open, through Sunday, March 16.
This program is dedicated to offering visual artists, writers, performers, designers and other creative individuals time and space to investigate and pursue their own practices while integrating the community and providing a collaborative learning environment. To be considered for this residency, proposed projects must directly address, utilize and be specific to the East 40. NCC requires that residents provide an interactive service to the college community during the residency, and create a culminating project in 2026.
The East 40 is located on NCC’s Bethlehem campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, and includes 40+ acres of meadows and woods, providing a home to a 3.5 acre farm, numerous community gardens, kilns and a studio space, classroom and outdoor gathering spaces.
The East 40 residency program has 2-3 slots available for Summer 2025, depending on available funds and resources. One slot is reserved for NCC faculty or staff and one is reserved for a visual artist. One person can satisfy both requirements. The other slot(s) are open to all areas of the humanities. The stipend for each resident is a maximum of $3,000.
Previous recipients have created multimedia art from found objects on the property; foraged plants to create paper; been inspired to create poetry and music from the surroundings; and crafted natural dyes and pigments from materials on the East 40 grounds.
The dream of the East 40 community – since its inception in September 2010 – is to create and foster a welcoming space for place-based learning. The twin concepts of justice and equity provide for a valuable mindset for our participants and partners, and the shared lens by which we process and understand our work.
