Wrestlers hoping hard work pays off during postseason

Whitehall’s wrestling team has experienced its share of success this season, and head coach Tim Cunningham is confident his team will make a strong individual and team showing in the upcoming District 11 championships at Liberty High School.

“All of the guys have worked really hard all season,” said Cunningham. “We recently made it to the district duals, and that was one of our team goals.

“We had a good season with our individual matches, and we have had plenty of good moments at tournaments. We have grown as a team, and we will be ready to compete this weekend.”

The Zephyrs will roll out the lineup of sophomore Adam Gasteratos (107 pounds, 7-6), junior Wilmont Kai (114. 24-2), junior Kade Pascoe (121, 23-7), senior Dayvion Marshmon (127, 12-10), senior Trokon Kai (139, 20-10), senior Nolan Schmeckenbecher (145, 20-7), freshman Rocco Fonzone (145-152, 8-5), senior Elijah Brito (160, 13-14), sophomore Layony Sanchez (172, 8-10), junior James Hopkins (189, 23-6), and sophomore Justin Heckert (285, 8-9).

Hopkins, who was fourth at districts last season and finished with an overall 34-10 record, is expecting a challenging weekend ahead.

Still, Hopkins is taking a positive approach.

“I know this year my weight class is very tough,” said Hopkins. “It will be vert difficult to move on.

“But this year, I’m going into it with a lot more confidence than I had last year. I’m looking forward to challenges.”

Pascoe, who finished fifth at districts last year and posted an overall 29-15 record, has high aspirations for this year.

“I am going to approach this weekend like any other tournament even though I have a tough weight class,” said Pascoe. “My goal is to be on the podium and advance to next weekend as well as the following weekend.”

Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. Friday and quarterfinals will start no later than 6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s session begins at 9 a.m. with semifinals slated around 10:15 a.m.

Consolation finals take place at 3:30 p.m. and finals for 3A and 2A begin at 4:45 p.m. on two mats.
