Weisenberg supervisors heard updates on the community center and Night in the Country at their Feb. 10 meeting.

Township Manager Brian Carl said he had a couple things on the community center to report.

“Myself and Jeff and Ellen Broadhurst have been going on a couple field trips to look at some senior centers after meeting with Lehigh County Center for Aging, he said. “They kind of opened us up to a whole other area that we don’t think any of us realized was out there.

“There’s some funding available for certain programs.

“We are also going to be looking at some other community centers trying to learn what works, building needs and how we’re paying for everything.

“We continue to chip away at that if anyone ever wants to come to these.

He said they went to the senior center in Allentown.

“It has been established for quite a while and has lots of programs,” Carl said. “A much different scope than what we have been looking at but we’re trying to make this so we have events for all ages, kids, middle age, and elderly.”

He noted the county reached out to the township saying there is a need for programs for older folks in the area.

“It was really interesting to see what is out there,” Carl said. “There is some funding assistance for that and everything so we’re going to keep looking at our options.”

Supervisor Richard Bleiler, representative to the Northwestern Recreation Commission, provided an update on Night in the Country.

He said profits were in the $7,000 range.

“There’s some sentiment on the board that is a whole lot of effort for $7,000 when we could have a guarantee from all the townships for whatever the guys were paid for that week,” he stated. “It’s come up in discussion but we’re not going in that direction.”

Chairwoman Linda Gorgas commented.

“That was the discussion when I was on the board, too, so it doesn’t surprise me,” Gorgas said. “Lot of work for that.

“It’s good the cost of the fireworks dropped, otherwise it would have been a loss.”

Bleiler also reported the two people who basically did the grunt work on Night in the Country are saying they are willing to help but they can’t do it anymore.

They need some help at least one maybe more people.

“Again they don’t want to bow out but they have other things going on in their lives and they were a little overwhelmed, I’m afraid,” Bleiler stated.

Carl added his comment.

“The Northwestern Recreation Commission is looking for assistance coordinating Night in the Country,” Carl said. “They can probably contact any of the four townships (Heidelberg, Lowhill, Lynn, and Weisenberg) to get hooked up with the appropriate parties.”

Under new business, the board approved a motion to appoint Campbell, Rappold, and Yurasits LLP of Allentown as the auditors for 2024 audit.

The board also approved a motion to purchase a 2009 international single axle dump truck with no plow and no spreader from Upper Macungie Township for $45,000.

Under old business, the board approved the supervisors compensation ordinance.

Carl said this ordinance increases the compensation for elected supervisors entering their new term.

“The new amount will be $3,145 per year as set by the state legislator,” he said.
